What to do if you cannot setup email account on iPhone XS Mail?
If you are new to iOS, then you should create a new Apple ID account first. Your Apple ID and password will serve as the primary key that grant access to various iOS services such as iCloud, iTunes, App Store, Mail and more. If you already have one, then you just have to sign in to iCloud using the existing Apple ID on your new iPhone.
Once you’ve signed
First solution: Refresh your Internet connection.
Email setup errors in mobile devices are usually tied to network connectivity issues. Apparently, the device cannot access the email server hence Mail connection fails too. To rule this out, restarting Wi-Fi Internet connection on the phone can be deemed a potential solution. Doing so will refresh the phone’s Internet connection and rectify network connectivity errors like email setup. Refreshing the Internet connection can be done in different ways and here’s one of the applicable methods:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Wi-Fi switch to disable the feature.
- After a few seconds, tap the switch again to turn Wi-Fi back on.
Allow your phone to reconnect to your Wi-Fi network. To make sure you can access the Internet on your iPhone XS, open a browser app then navigate to any website. You can also try logging in to your email account through webmail to see if you can login successfully. Reattempt to set up your email account on your iPhone XS afterwards and see if it works. If not, then try the next possible solution.
Second solution: Soft reset/restart your iPhone XS.
A simple restart or soft reset can help resolve minor software errors including those transpiring on the Mail app. It also dumps corrupted cache from apps and the phone’s internal memory, thus clears out random problems. If this is the first time you encounter error setting up email account on your new iPhone XS, then it’s likely just a random glitch that can easily be remedied by a soft reset. That said, follow these steps to soft reset/reboot your iphone x:
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume Up or Down buttons simultaneously and then release both buttons when the Slide to Power Off menu appears.
- Then drag the power off slider to turn off your iPhone completely.
Alternatively, you can perform a force restart on your iPhone XS to clear errant background apps that may have caused conflict with the Mail app operations. Here’s how it’s done:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Finally, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Both these restarts won’t affect any saved data on the internal memory, thus won’t cause data loss.
Third solution: Re-attempt to set up email account manually.
If you failed to set up your email account through automatic Mail account setup, then you can retry setting up the same email account on your iPhone XS manually instead. To get this done, ready all necessary information including your email server settings beforehand. Once you’re all set, retry setting up email account on your iPhone XS manually with these steps:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap Mail.
- Select Passwords & Accounts.
- Tap Add Account…
- Select your email provider from the list.
- Enter necessary details including your email address, password, and other required information into their respective fields.
- Then tap Next to continue.
- If you prefer, choose to sync other options like Contacts and Calendars by marking the checkbox.
- Then tap Save to apply the recent changes.
If you don’t know what information to enter especially for the incoming and outgoing server settings, contact your Internet service provider or carrier for further assistance.
If the email account setup is successfully finished, restart your iPhone XS to apply the recent changes and then try to fetch emails on your phone. You can also create a sample email message then use your own email account as the recipient to see if you can send and receive the email.
Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XS.
This will erase all customized settings from your iPhone including those that may have caused conflict with the Mail app account setup process. Unlike a factory reset/master reset, this reset won’t affect any saved data on the phone storage so you don’t need to create backups. Here’s how it’s done:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap General.
- Scroll to and tap Reset.
- Select Reset All Settings option.
- If prompted, enter your device passcode.
- Then tap the option to confirm all settings reset.
After the reset, default options and settings are restored. Reboot your iPhone XS after the reset and then reconnect to your Wi-Fi network to get back online. Reattempt to set up your email account after that and see if it’s successful this time.
Other options
A factory reset can be considered among the last options if you’re still unable to setup email account on your iPhone XS. There may be some more complicated errors that halt you from adding new accounts through Mail and that must be cleared first. Before you go for a factory reset/master reset, make sure you back up all important files from the phone to iCloud or iTunes. Once you have the backup ready, you may start carrying out a factory reset through your iPhone XS settings menu or using iTunes on a computer.
If you still cannot set up email account through the iPhone XS Mail app after applying the previous workarounds, then you can escalate the problem to your carrier or email provider for further assistance. There may be some server settings or options that need to be manually configured to successfully setup your email account. If you see any error codes or messages prompts, take note of them. Error messages are specifically designed to let end-users know that something went wrong and that you need to do something to make it right.
