If your iPhone XS refuses to install the latest iOS update, you’re not alone. Even though it’s a high-end device with plenty of storage, some users still run into failed update attempts. This guide covers all the possible reasons your iPhone XS might not be updating—and how to fix each one.
1. Make Sure You’re Connected to the Internet
A working Wi-Fi connection is required to download updates. If your internet is unstable or not working, the update won’t go through.
- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and make sure you’re connected.
- Open Safari and try loading a website to test the connection.
- If the internet seems slow or doesn’t work, try restarting your router:
- Turn the router off and unplug it from power.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- You can also toggle Wi-Fi off and back on in your iPhone settings.
Once you’re back online, try updating again by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
2. Try the Airplane Mode Trick
This quick fix can clear minor network glitches.
- Go to Settings > Airplane Mode and turn it ON.
- Restart your iPhone.
- Then go back and turn Airplane Mode OFF.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and check for updates again.
3. Check If the Update File Is Corrupted
Sometimes the update file itself gets corrupted during the download.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Look for the iOS update file (it will say something like “iOS 17.x.x”).
- Tap it, then tap Delete Update.
- Once deleted, go back to Settings > General > Software Update and download it again.
4. Reset All Settings
If some incorrect settings are blocking the update, this will clear them—without deleting your data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted, then confirm.
- Your phone will restart. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and try the update again.
5. Try Updating Through a Computer
If the over-the-air update won’t work, use iTunes (or Finder on macOS Catalina or later):
- On your Mac or PC, open iTunes or Finder.
- Plug in your iPhone XS using a Lightning cable.
- Select your device when it appears.
- Click Check for Update.
- If one is available, click Download and Update.
- Follow the onscreen instructions and enter your passcode if needed.
6. Free Up Storage If Needed
Even though the iPhone XS has plenty of storage, an update may still fail if you’re running low.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Check how much free space you have.
- Delete large apps, old photos/videos, or offload unused apps to clear space.
- Aim for at least 3–5 GB of free space before attempting the update again.
7. Force Restart Your iPhone XS
Sometimes, a simple reboot isn’t enough.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Once your phone restarts, connect to Wi-Fi and try the update again.
8. Check Apple’s Server Status
If Apple’s update servers are having issues, there’s nothing wrong with your phone.
- Visit Apple’s System Status page and check if the iOS Software Update service is green.
- If it’s down or yellow, try again later.
9. Still Not Updating? Contact Apple Support
If none of these fixes work, your iPhone might have a deeper software issue or even a hardware-related one. Reach out to Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for hands-on help.
