FaceTime is usually quick and easy to use — but when it stops working, it can be a headache. Whether you’re trying to video call over Wi-Fi or cellular data, FaceTime relies on a stable network and correct settings. If you’re having issues getting FaceTime to work on your iPhone XS, here’s what to do.
Step 1: Check Apple’s FaceTime System Status
Before you do anything on your phone, visit Apple’s System Status page and check if FaceTime is down. If there’s an outage, there’s nothing to fix on your end — just wait it out.
If FaceTime is up, move on to the next steps.
Step 2: Toggle FaceTime Off and Back On
A simple refresh can sometimes fix random glitches.
- Go to Settings → FaceTime.
- Toggle FaceTime off.
- Restart your iPhone.
- Go back to Settings → FaceTime, then toggle it back on.
Step 3: Sign Out of Apple ID and Sign Back In
If FaceTime still won’t connect, try logging out of your Apple ID and signing in again.
- Go to Settings → FaceTime.
- Tap your Apple ID under “You can be reached at.”
- Select Sign Out.
- Restart your phone.
- Go back to FaceTime settings and sign in again using your Apple ID.
Step 4: Check Date and Time Settings
Incorrect time settings can block FaceTime.
- Go to Settings → General → Date & Time.
- Enable Set Automatically.
- Make sure the Time Zone is correct.
Step 5: Reset Network Settings
If the issue is tied to Wi-Fi or cellular data, reset your network settings.
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
Your iPhone will reboot. Reconnect to Wi-Fi or turn on cellular data and try FaceTime again.
Step 6: Factory Reset as a Last Resort
If nothing else has worked, a factory reset might be needed to clear out deeper bugs.
Important: Back up your iPhone before doing this.
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
After the reset, set up your iPhone as new and test FaceTime again before restoring your backup.

If you’re trying to use Group FaceTime, all participants must be on:
- iOS 12 or later
- macOS Mojave or later
Group FaceTime won’t work with older devices or outdated software.
