How to fix Siri that's not working on your iPad Air 3 after updating iOS

Updates are primarily aimed at providing new features and system enhancements to a receiving device and thus, keeping the device system up-to-date is recommended. Nonetheless, not all updates render positive results upon installation. Thus many people succumbed to various types of post-update problems. Tackled in this post is a relevant issue on the iPad Air 3. It’s about Siri that suddenly stopped working after updating the iPad software to the latest version. Fixing an iPad Air 3 with Siri that no longer works

Apple’s very own voice-controlled personal virtual assistant called Siri allows users of newer iOS devices to speak natural language voice commands to operate apps and the device itself. It’s a counterpart to Google Assistant in Android devices. To get Siri to work, it must be enabled or turned on first along with the iOS Dictation feature. Once you’ve got Siri enabled, you are already set to input voice commands by simply saying “Hey Siri” on your device and then state the succeeding command(s) you’d want Siri to execute for you. Siri is a built-in application on your iPhone or iPad. Thus, updates for Siri are typically embedded into a new iOS version released by Apple. If Siri doesn’t respond to your voice input commands after updating your device, then it’s possible that the new update contains some bugs that have somehow spoiled Siri’s normal functions. To give you some input, I’ve lined up some possible solutions to fix Siri that has stopped working from an iOS update. Feel free to refer to this troubleshooting guide when needed.

Before troubleshooting, check and make sure that your iPad Air 3 has Internet connection. Siri may not be able to execute commands, particularly those that require online resources simply because your device is experiencing Internet problems from slow browsing to intermittent or no Internet connection at all. To test your Internet connection, open a browser app like Safari on your iPad Air 3 and then try navigating through various websites. You can also test online apps to load up on your device. If there’s no problem with the Internet connection and yet Siri is still not working on your iPad Air 3, then you may proceed and begin to troubleshoot your device.

First solution: Reboot your iPad Air 3 (soft reset or force restart).

The simplest possible solution to try if something goes wrong after installing updates is a device restart or soft reset on the iPad Air 3. Aside from dumping junk files from cache, it also clears out random symptoms inflicted by minor firmware crashes and app glitches following the recent system transition. This doesn’t affect any saved information on the iPad storage and therefore does not require backup creation beforehand. If you haven’t already, then here’s how to soft reset your iPad Air 3.

  • Simultaneously press and hold the Power button and Home button until the device shuts down and reboots. 
  • Then release the buttons when the Apple logo appears.

Allow your device to finish its boot-up sequence and once it’s up, try launching Siri and see if the problem is gone.

Second solution: Turn Siri off and on again.

The update might have automatically overridden your device settings and thereby result in Siri being turned off. To rule this out, follow these steps to disable/enable Siri on your iPad Air 3:

  1. Tap Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Select Siri & Search.
  3. Then to turn off the switches for Listen for “Hey Siri,” “Press Home for Siri,” and Allow Siri When Locked (if available).
  4. If prompted, tap to confirm that you want to Turn Off Siri.

While Siri is turned off, reboot your iPad to clear its memory cache and to refresh apps and its system functions. Then head back to Settings-> Siri & Search menu to turn Siri back on.

Third solution: Turn Dictation off and on again.

Dictation is another iOS feature that works hand in hand with Siri. Given that your device will lose the ability to utilize voice commands upon disabling Siri, it is therefore sensible to disable Dictation as well. Disabling Dictation feature also removes all of your voice data from Apple’s servers thus any corrupted voice data that might have caused conflicts to Siri will also be eliminated. In iOS 12 or later devices like your iPad Air 3, turning off Dictation is carried out this way:

  1. From your Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Keyboard.
  4. Then scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap Enable Dictation button.
  5. If prompted, tap Turn Off Dictation to confirm action.

After turning Dictation off, reboot your iPad and then head back to the same Keyboard menu from Settings-> General folder, to enable Dictation again.

Fourth solution: Toggle Airplane mode on and off.

Software bugs inflicting minor flaws to wireless services including Siri can also be addressed by performing the Airplane mode trick. It works by simultaneously refreshing wireless radios on your iOS devices. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Go to Settings-> Airplane Mode menu.
  2. Toggle the switch to turn Airplane Mode on. Doing so disables all wireless features simultaneously.
  3. While Airplane mode is enabled, reboot/soft reset your iPad Air to clear and refresh its memory.
  4. As soon as it completes the boot-up sequence, head on back to Settings-> Airplane Mode menu and then toggle the switch to disable Airplane mode on your device again.

Allow your device to reactivate wireless radios and then enable Wi-Fi to reconnect to the Internet and use online services including Siri & Search.

Fifth solution: Turn off restrictions on your iPad Air 3.

It is also possible that the new update has automatically enabled restrictions to Siri or other relevant services. As a result, the app is limited or completely barred from running or loading on your device. To rule this out, check and manage restrictions on your iPad Air 3 with these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select Screen Time.
  3. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  4. Toggle the switch next to Content & Privacy to lift restrictions for all apps including associated services with Siri.

Reboot your iPad and then test launch Siri to see if it’s already working properly.

Sixth solution: Reset all settings on your iPad Air 3.

If something goes wrong after installing software updates on an iOS device, it is recommended to reset all settings. Doing so will eliminate erratic auto-overrides that caused adverse symptoms and errors to arise. Original values and configurations are restored afterwards. If you wish to try it, then here’s how it’s done:

  1. Go to the Home screen then tap on Settings.
  2. Next, tap General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Reset.
  4. Choose Reset all settings from the given options.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked to continue.
  6. Confirm when asked if you want to reset all settings on your iPad Air 3.

Allow your iPad to reboot automatically and once it’s back up, head on to Settings and make sure that Wi-Fi, Siri and Dictation features are enabled.

Last resort: Restore your iPad Air software in iTunes.

The problem might be due to a complex iOS bug that could not be remedied by the initial procedures. At this point, restoring iOS through iTunes is needed. You will need to use a Mac or Windows PC to carry out this process. The computer must be connected to the Internet and has iTunes in it. Once you’ve got the equipment ready, follow these steps to perform a standard iOS restore through iTunes:

  1. Open iTunes on your computer. Be sure to use the latest version of iTunes app to avoid system conflicts.
  2. Connect your iPad using the original Lightning cable or the USB cable that came with it.
  3. When your iPad appears in iTunes, click on its icon to select it.
  4. Then navigate to the Summary section and click the Restore [device name] button.
  5. If prompted, click the Restore button to confirm.
  6. Doing so will prompt iTunes to start erasing your device and then installs the latest iOS version available.

Wait until the system restore is complete and once it’s done, you can disconnect your iPad from the computer and then test if Siri is already working.

Still couldn’t get Siri to work on your iPad Air 3?

Performing a recovery mode restore and DFU mode restore are among the last options you’ve got to try if none of the previous solutions worked and that Siri is still not functioning on your iPad Air 3. Both these methods require the use of iTunes on Windows or Mac computer. Fatal system errors including stubborn symptoms triggered by complex iOS bugs are usually remedied by these procedures but both of them could result in permanent data loss. Thus, creating a backup of all your critical data saved on the iPad storage is highly recommended before your proceed.

And if iTunes couldn’t get to resolve the issue, you can resort to use third-party iOS repair and recovery tools.
