iPhone X Black Screen of Death? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone X suddenly went black and won’t respond—no screen, no sound, no signs of life—you may be facing the dreaded “black screen of death.” Don’t panic just yet. This issue is often caused by a firmware crash or a battery that’s completely drained, and in many cases, it can be fixed without a trip to the Apple Store.
Here’s what you can do to bring your iPhone X back to life.
1. Perform a Forced Restart
The most common fix for an unresponsive iPhone is a forced reboot. This helps clear minor glitches or firmware crashes that can freeze your screen.
Here’s how:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side (Power) button until the Apple logo appears.
It may take 20–30 seconds of holding the Side button before anything happens. Be patient—this often works.
2. Charge Your iPhone (Even If It Looks Dead)
If your battery is fully drained, it may not respond right away—even when plugged in.
Try this:
- Plug your iPhone X into a working charger and wall outlet.
- Leave it charging for 10–15 minutes.
- Then try the forced restart again (Volume Up → Volume Down → Hold Side button).
A drained battery can also cause the firmware to crash, making your iPhone appear completely dead.
3. Connect Your iPhone to a Computer
Your phone might still be on, but with a broken display. Plug it into a Mac or PC and open iTunes (or Finder on macOS Catalina or later). If your computer detects your iPhone, the screen may be damaged.
If iTunes recognizes the device, you’ll be able to:
- Back up your data
- Try a standard restore
- Enter Recovery Mode or DFU Mode for deeper fixes
4. Try a DFU Mode Restore (Advanced Fix)
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode lets you reinstall iOS even if your screen doesn’t turn on.
To enter DFU mode:
- Connect your iPhone X to your computer.
- Press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Hold the Side button for 3 seconds.
- While holding Side, press and hold Volume Down for 10 seconds.
- Release the Side button, but keep holding Volume Down for another 5 seconds.
If the screen stays black but iTunes/Finder detects your iPhone, you’re in DFU mode.
From there, follow the on-screen prompts to restore the device.
5. Still Not Working? Time for Repair
If your iPhone X doesn’t respond to any of the above steps, it may have suffered:
- Hardware failure
- Display damage
- Battery or logic board failure
Bring your phone to an Apple Store or authorized service provider for a professional diagnosis—especially if it was dropped or exposed to water recently.
