If you’ve ever tried to rip a DVD, you’ve no doubt experienced how difficult it is. There are plenty of programs out there to do it, but not all of them are perfect.
Some programs will work, others won’t because of strict copyright protections, and then others will take a really long time to complete the process. Some programs even error out during the ripping process, causing nothing but frustration and a complete time waste.
So, we’re going to help you skip all of that frustration by showing you two methods that you can use to rip those traditional DVDs into digital MP4 formats that you can play, well, almost anywhere! Let’s dive right in.
Digital conversion will save you time and money
Everything is digital or is moving towards the digital space. Even most DVDs and Blu-Rays that you purchase today come with a promo code that you can enter into the computer for a free digital copy of the content. Suffice to say, you might have realized that it’s time to finally transfer all of your old, physical DVD copies into a digital format that you can easily track.
There’s a number of reasons as to why you should convert your physical DVD copies into a digital format. The most obvious reason is in losing or damaging your physical copies. DVDs are easily lost, and it’s even easier to damage them — that can happen by simply using them on a regular basis.
They easily accrue scratches and nicks that make them unplayable over time, which means you either have to do some extensive cleaning or you have to purchase new. And with some of the older DVDs, purchasing new just isn’t an option. That’s where digital copies can really come into play.
Of course, having a digital copy of all of your DVDs will ensure that you don’t waste time tearing your home apart, looking for that copy of a DVD that you lost, not to mention the lack of stress as well.
A second reason might be content sharing. Say you want to loan a DVD to a friend or multiple friends, but you want to make sure you get it back. By converting your DVD into a digital format, you can simply send your friends copies of the file for them to watch locally on their computer. Many Smart TVs are even capable of playing MP4 files directly as well.
Handbrake and WinX DVD Ripper
Handbrake and WinX DVD Ripper are both excellent ways that you can reliably convert those physical DVDs over to digital copies. HandBrake is a nice, community-led open source solution to DVD ripping, whereas WinX DVD Ripper is a company-sponsored program from Digiarty. They’re both great programs for ripping DVDs, but WinX DVD Ripper does have some advantages over Handbrake.
For one, Handbrake is an excellent solution for ripping general DVDs. However, since it’s a community-led program, it doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles that one might expect out of a fully featured DVD riper program.
For one, it can only rip general DVDs. With the help of a library like Libdvdcss, you might have some better luck at ripping new DVDs, but for the most part, tough copyright protections are something that Handbrake hasn’t been able to overcome just yet. You’ll run into all sorts of errors in trying to convert those newer DVDs, let alone even be able to start the process.
On the other hand, WinX DVD Ripper is an excellent way to rip any DVD out there, even the protected ones with strict copyright policies.
Not only that, but WinX DVD Ripper has way more features than Handbrake — you’ll get access to ultra-fast ripping with GPU acceleration features, the ability to keep the original quality and resolution in place after the ripping, and not to mention regular updates that consistently improve the program’s performance and features.
The real nice thing about both of these programs is that they’re are both free to download. Since Handbrake is a community-led, open source program, it can be downloaded free of charge. WinX DVD Ripper is a company-built program, but its basic functionality is free to use, though some features are “unlocked” by paying for a license.
So, that’s great and all, but how do you use these programs on your computer to properly rip DVDs into a digital format. We’ll show you how the process works in both Handbrake and WinX DVD Ripper.
How to rip DVD to MP4 with Handbrake
The first step is to head to Handbrake’s home page and download the program. Like we mentioned already, it’s open source, so it’s free to download. Once downloaded, open up the program and we can get started.
Like we mentioned already, Handbrake is able to rip unprotected DVDs, but in today’s the world, those are few and far between. DVDs are loaded with copyright protections these days. The good news is that there’s a library out there to help you with this problem. You can grab the library for free here (this one is the 64-bit version). Once downloaded, we’ll need to move it into Handbrake — C:Program FilesHandbrake will be just fine.
From here on out, ripping a DVD is easy. Put the DVD in your DVD tray, and then press the Source button in the Handbrake program. This is at the top-left corner.
Now, back in the top left corner, click the option that says Title. You’ll want to pick the longest title there, as that will allow you to rip the full movie. If you’re trying to rip, say, smaller chunks of content, such as a TV show, you’ll want to select either the 22 or 44 minute titles — you’ll need to determine which one is ideal for the TV show you’re watching.
However, you can only rip one episode at a time this way, so this can be a bit of a time investment.
Now, we’ll need to select the option that says Presets. Similar to Output Profiles in WinX DVD Ripper, this is essentially how you choose the destination file format. Select Normal or High Profile presets are fine, If you’re going for mobile, you’ll need to select the appropriate choice from the list — they are all correctly labeled for iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.
And finally, press Start. This will start the ripping process, and you’ll need to be patient in the meantime. Handbrake isn’t nearly as fast as WinX DVD Ripper, so this can actually take up to a few hours to complete the process. When it’s complete, a notification will appear, and you should be able to find your file in the destination folder selected earlier.
How to rip DVD to MP4 With WinX DVD Ripper
The first step is to — obviously — get the software downloaded on your Windows PC. You can grab DVD Ripper for free here. Once installed and the prompts followed, open up the program.
Once we’re in the program, we’ll need to choose a DVD that you want to convert to a digital format — to do this, click on the DVD button from the tools at the top of the program. This will load the DVD into WinX DVD Ripper for the conversion process.
Next, we will need to select an Output Profile. WinX DVD Ripper has a lot of options for this, allowing you to convert your DVD into a format for almost any device out there today. You can choose mobile devices like the iphone x, iPhone 8 Plus, and an endless amount of other devices. You can convert to a bunch of different formats as well — H.264, MPEG4, and plenty others.
There are, of course, plenty of other Output Profiles then this. For example, you can convert straight to MP4 as well as ISO formats. You can go through the list and figure out which Output Profile will work for your purposes the most.
Once you’re done selecting your Output Profile, you can simply press OK at the bottom of the window. Next, you’ll need to select a Destination Folder for where you want your converted file to end up. You can do this by pressing the Browse button, just to the right of the Destination Folder field. Select a folder where you want your file to show up, and press OK.
Next, there are sliders that you can adjust on each individual Output Profile. You can adjust it based on your needs, allowing you to move it for higher quality at a slower processing speed, or at a lower quality, but at a fast processing speed. It’s your choice!
When you’ve gone through all of this, there’s some still settings that we can adjust. Like we mentioned, one of the advantages to WinX DVD Ripper is that it has something called the High Quality Engine or GPU Acceleration — this option sits near the big button that says RUN. You’ll want to make sure it’s checked, and by checking it, you’ll speed up the ripping process exponentially. If it isn’t the ripping does take some time to complete.
Finally, once you’re ready to start, just press the big button that says RUN at the bottom right of the program to start the ripping process.
From here, watching your movie is easy. If saved in a format for the iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to transfer it over to that device. Once it’s transferred, you should simply be able to open it up in iOS’ local media program, and it should play flawlessly.
If you’re trying to watch the file on Windows, a media program that can play it should automatically recognize the file type. If it isn’t, you can simply right-click on the file, and select the Open With selection. You should have some pre-set media programs that you can automatically choose from; however, if there’s a specific one you want to use, you can always click Browse and manually select the .exe of the media application.
Other features that WinX DVD Ripper has
If you own a newer PC or laptop — or have a computer that has the proper Intel or NVIDIA hardware — WinX DVD Ripper is able to use DVD decoding, processing, and encoding to its fullest extent. Also called GPU acceleration, this is able to speed up the ripping process exponentially. It’s a whole lot better than the traditional ripping process.
In most cases, acceleration tends to leave your video and audio quality in a mess. However, you’ll be happy to know that WinX DVD Ripper accelerates the copying process without sacrificing video and audio quality.
You actually get the original audio and video quality of the DVD. WinX DVD Ripper has done some benchmarking with the software, and depending on your comptuer’s hardware — with acceleration enabled — you should be able to copy a 2-hour DVD in under five minutes, with it ready to be watched in five minutes or less. Here’s the word from WinX DVD Ripper themselves:
With unique level-3 hardware acceleration, it can fully utilize Intel Core i5/i7 processors, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, etc for efficient DVD video processing. It can reach 32x real-time faster conversion speed, with up to 500 Max FPS (decided by GPU, DVD-ROM, etc), with a perfect balance among speed, output quality and file size. Together with Multi-core CPU, Super Encode Engine based on MMX- SSE & 3DNow! and Hyper-threading tech, ripping a feature-length DVD movie only takes about 5 minutes.
In addition to that, the WinX DVD Ripper ensures that you only get the highest quality out of your copy. It uses something called a High Quality Engine, which is their own proprietary technology for keeping that original DVD quality in place.
WinX DVD Ripper actually uses a demuxing/remuxing kernel to copy over all of the contents and quality of the DVD without having to re-encode, leaving your DVD at its highest original quality.
There’s another option you can select that uses a interframe and intraframe coding algorithm to reconstruct the DVD content, which gets rid of temporal and spatial redundancies during the ripping process — this ultimately gives you a video file that is 98% the original quality of the DVD. That’s something you would never see in open source software like Handbrake.
Finally, the other highlight that WinX DVD Ripper has is just how much support there is for DVDs. As we mentioned, WinX DVD Ripper is able to rip protected DVDs, but as far as specifics go, you should be able to use WinX DVD Ripper to rip non-Universal Disk Formats, “99 title” DVDs, workout DVDs, TV series, and even special DVDs that are region locked to Japan.
Handbrake has its place in the market, but as far as versatility goes, you’re going to have a much higher success rate using something like WinX DVD Ripper. WinX DVD Ripper is able to rip almost any format of DVD out there, even breaking through tough encryption and copyright protections.
Want to copy over something like the latest Star Wars movies to your computer? WinX DVD Ripper is up for the job, and can do it in five minutes or less.
As an added bonus, WinX DVD Ripper is completely free of charge. You won’t have to pay a dime for this program, though they do have a “paid for” tier to unlock special, extra features. You can grab your copy of WinX DVD Ripper for free right here.
