iPhone XS Responding Slowly to Touch? Here’s How to Fix Laggy or Unresponsive Screen Issues
If your iPhone XS has suddenly started reacting sluggishly to touch—or shows noticeable delays when you swipe, tap, or open apps—you’re not imagining it. Whether the issue appeared after an update or out of nowhere, it’s a common problem that can usually be traced to background app conflicts, software bugs, memory pressure, or misconfigured settings.
Before assuming it’s a hardware issue, try these easy-to-follow solutions to speed up your touchscreen response and restore your iPhone’s performance.
1. Force Restart Your iPhone XS
When your screen starts lagging, a force restart often fixes it by flushing out temporary system glitches and closing errant background apps.
Here’s how to force restart:
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Check your screen responsiveness again once the device boots up.
2. Close All Background Apps
Too many apps running in the background—even on newer devices—can lead to system slowdowns.
- Swipe up from the bottom and pause mid-screen.
- Swipe up on all app previews to close them.
- Return to the Home screen and test the touch response.
3. Install Pending App Updates
Outdated apps can misbehave and cause system lag, especially after a major iOS update.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon and scroll to see pending updates.
- Tap Update All, or update apps individually.
Restart your phone after updates install.
4. Check for iOS Updates
A bug in your current iOS version might be causing lag. Apple regularly releases patches for known issues.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
Make sure your battery is charged and you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
5. Reset All Settings
Sometimes incorrect or conflicting settings can slow down touch response.
This will not delete your data, but it will reset system preferences and Wi-Fi settings.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted and confirm.
Once your phone restarts, test the responsiveness.
6. Factory Reset as a Last Resort
If your iPhone XS is still sluggish and unresponsive, it may be time for a full reset.
⚠️ Back up your data first via iCloud or iTunes.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Confirm the reset and follow prompts to restore your iPhone to factory settings.
After setup, test the screen responsiveness before restoring from a backup.
7. Still Not Working? Try Recovery or DFU Mode Restore
If lag persists:
- Try a Recovery Mode Restore via iTunes or Finder.
- Or perform a DFU Mode Restore (Device Firmware Update) for a deep-level software refresh.
You’ll find full walkthroughs on both options in our [Tutorial Page].
When to Contact Apple
If your iPhone XS still responds slowly after all these fixes:
- It may be a hardware issue—especially if the phone has been dropped or exposed to water.
- Visit an Apple Store or authorized service center for diagnostics.
- If under warranty, you may be eligible for a free repair or replacement.
