iPhone 7 types of Group Messages, SMS automatically converted to MMS, other issues

Problem 1: iPhone 7 types of Group Messages, SMS automatically converted to MMS

Trying to send SMS to group of people but iPhone 7 automatically tries to send this to all entries under contact – be it cell phone number; email; stationary phone. As a result iPhone only sends MMS to a group of people however not all receivers have enabled the function to read MMS. When I switch off MMS under Settings of my iPhone then I get warning that “MMS should be turned on to send message to email” however in the contact tab of my sms all contacts has also cell phone numbers.. Is there any chance? or maybe there is free online tool that can be used instead. I found that none of App store apps does this for free. — Klavs.reizins

Solution: Hi Klavs.reizins. There are a few reasons why regular text messages are converted to MMS. These reasons include the following:

  • SMS is too long
  • at least one contact you’re sending to is an email
  • SMS has a subject line
  • Message, however short, but includes an emoji, photo, or any form of media attachment
  • phone is simply coded to automatically convert SMS to MMS when sending to multiple recipients

In iOS, group messages are categorized into three types — group SMS, group MMS, and group iMessage. If you are using the default Messages app and not any other third party messaging app, you cannot control what type of group message you want to use. Instead, your phone automatically picks the best group message type for you based on a few settings like network connection, carrier plan, and the phone settings of your contacts. If everyone in the group, including you, are all using iOS devices with iMessage turn on, then everyone will receive group iMessage. If there are contacts in the group that are not using iMessage, the phone will either send your message as either group MMS or group SMS. Let’s briefly discuss each of these group message types.

Group iMessage, which is a proprietary messaging platform of Apple, is only supported by Apple devices and only works when both the sender and the recipient have it enabled in both their devices. It goes through Apple servers and requires internet connection, either via wifi or mobile data, to work. It’s similar to how Facebook Messenger and Google Hangouts work so you can send all forms of multimedia attachments in it. In group iMessage, everyone can see the responses of each member. Group iMessage appear in blue text bubbles.

Group MMS, unlike Group iMessage, no longer works via Apple servers but instead goes through your carrier’s network. Like Group iMessage though, it still requires internet connection via mobile data in order to send and receive any form of multimedia attachments. It also allows members in this group to see responses from each member. Group MMS appears in green text bubbles.

Finally, Group SMS works like Group MMS, but not quite. The main difference is the fact that it doesn’t require mobile data subscription to work. However, it also can’t support multimedia attachments so you are limited to sending regular SMS only. In other words, Group SMS allows you to send a single SMS to a group of contacts at once but said message is sent as a single text. If one contact will respond to your group SMS, only you will receive the response. The rest of the group will not see the said response.

There’s no tool or app that can help you select what type of message (SMS or MMS) to send to particular members in a group while trying to send a group message. If some recipients don’t have mobile data enabled on their devices, they’ll only get your message in SMS form, and thus, be only able to respond in SMS kind as well. That’s not your fault. Unless you can convince them to enable or activate mobile data, you really have no other choice in the matter.

Problem 2: iPhone 7 Facebook Messenger issue, can’t send messages

Couple issues. Messages on Messenger showing up on my end but not theirs. It just says Hi but nothing else. My text are not showing up or disappearing and my emails doing the same. Everything looks good till I send it and when I go to sent file just few words as on messenger I see it all on my end but kit showing up in theirs — – it’s apps ( messenger ) & texting & email I have called Sprint. — Dana

Solution: Hi Dana. If you’re talking about Facebook Messenger here, these are the troubleshooting that you can try:

Restart the app

Apps can sometimes act funny or weird due to bugs and some of these bugs develop when the app has been up and running for a long time. To refresh the app, you must try to Force close it. Here’s how:

  1. Double-click the Home button to show your most recently used apps.
  2. Look for the app you’re having a problem with by swiping right and left.
  3. Once you’ve found the app, swipe up to close it.

Restart your iPhone 7

Like apps, your phone can benefit from a timely restart if it’s been up for some time already. To do that, simply press and hold the Top (or Side) button until the slider appears. Then, drag the slider to turn your phone off. Wait for a few moments before tapping Top (or Side) button to turn the phone on again.

Install latest updates for all apps and iOS

Facebook Messenger is being used by hundreds of millions of people around the world so there’s a chance that your issue is not isolated. If the app’s developer has already known the bug, there may already be an update with a fix available for installation at this time. The same is generally true for other apps so be sure to regularly check for updates for all of them.  To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Open the App Store and tap Updates.
  2. If updates are available, tap Update All.
  3. If asked, enter your Apple ID password.

Also, make sure that your phone runs that latest available iOS version. Here’s how to do that:

    1. Plug your device into power and connect to the Internet with Wi-Fi.
    2. Tap Settings > General > Software Update.


  • Tap Download and Install if there’s an available update.


  1. To update now, hit the Install button.
  2. Enter your passcode if necessary.

Uninstall, then reinstall the app

Another good troubleshooting step that you can try is to delete and reinstall Facebook Messenger app. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Tap and hold the app until it jiggles.
  2. Tap the “x” on the app.
  3. Press the Home button.
  4. Go to the App Store and download the app again.
  5. Wait for the app to download, then open it from the Home screen.

Let Facebook know

If all the steps above won’t help fix the issue at all, be sure to contact Facebook development team. This will allow you to create a ticket bug, which in turn, will bring the problem to their attention. If this problem is rampant, it’s all the more important that you report it to “upvote” the ticket, placing it higher in the priority list of the developers.

To contact the app developer, just do these steps:

  1. Find the app in the App Store.
  2. Tap the app, then tap Reviews.
  3. Underneath App Store Customer Reviews, tap App Support.

Problem 3: iPhone 7 not receiving iMessages, iMessages only shows in Mac but not in iPhone 7

I have been not receiving a lot of texts on iPhone 7. I have all the right buttons checked, even ‘send as SMS’ if iMessage not available.  The only reason I know I had not been receiving texts was because one day I turned on my Mac and 2 iMessages came into my Mac that had never been sent to my phone. Got nowhere talking to AT&T, it’s an unaccountable system. I didn’t work for a month because I wasn’t answering work texts!  #%%^@! — JJ

Solution: Hi JJ. if your Mac received your messages but not your iPhone, it’s possible that the iMessage settings was not properly set. Or it may be set to receive and start messages from your Apple ID instead of your phone number. To confirm if your phone number is set to send and receive messages, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Messages.
  3. Tap Send & Receive.
  4. Check if your phone number is shown. If not, you must link your phone number to your Apple ID first so it can send and receive iMessages. To do that, just follow this link.
