First solution: Reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XS Max.

Giving your phone a quick restart after making necessary changes can be ideal to make sure that these changes are properly applied. Doing so will also dump cache files from corrupted apps saved in your phone’s internal memory, refreshing your phone’s operating system. Here is how you do it:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. When the Slide to Power Off command appears, release the buttons.
  3. Drag the power off slider to the right to shut off your phone.
  4. After 30 seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.

As soon as your phone boots up, try to call your number from a different phone. If you still cannot receive phone calls after the soft reset, continue troubleshooting your phone.

Second solution: Toggle the Airplane Mode on then off again.

If the soft reset didn’t resolve the cannot receive phone calls issue on your iPhone XS Max, try to refresh your phone’s wireless network connections by turning the Airplane Mode on shortly, then turning it off again. Random wireless connectivity issues should be ruled out after doing this trick. Here’s how:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select the Airplane Mode menu.
  3. Toggle the switch to enable the feature. This will automatically disable the network functions on your phone.
  4. While Airplane mode is on, reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XS Max.
  5. Then head back to Settings->Airplane Mode menu and toggle the switch to turn off the feature again.

After you disable the Airplane mode, your phone’s wireless services including cellular network connection will be restored, refreshing its network functions. Then make a test call to your phone and see if you are already able to receive calls after performing this trick.

Third solution: Check for and disable DND (Do Not Disturb) and Call Forwarding features.

When DND feature is enabled, calls and phone notifications will be silence once your phone is locked. If this is the underlying cause as to why you are not able to receive phone calls, check this feature and disable when necessary. Here are the steps:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select Do Not Disturb.
  3. Toggle the switch to turn the feature off. All previously enabled DND options should then be disabled.

On the other hand, your phone will also not be able to receive phone calls if you have enabled the Call Forwarding feature. If so, all incoming calls will be routed to the set forwarding phone number. Thus, no phone calls will be received on your iPhone XS Max. To rule this out, you just need to disable the Call Forwarding feature using these steps:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down to and tap Phone to launch the phone apps settings and options.
  3. Scroll to and select Call Forwarding.
  4. If the feature is enabled, toggle the switch to turn off the Call Forwarding feature.

Restart (soft reset) your iPhone XS Max to ensure that the recently settings changes are properly applied. Then call your own number to make sure that the incoming call issue is already fixed.

Fourth solution: Check for and install carrier settings update.

Installing the latest carrier settings update is also known to resolve random network errors like incoming calls problem. Network provider often times pushed such updates to maintain and improve your phone’s network-related functions. The carrier settings update are often implemented automatically by your carrier.  But in case it has not been automatically pushed through this time, you can also do it manually. Here’s how:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll to and tap About.

If a new carrier settings update is available, a notification will pop up on your screen. Simply follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the carrier settings update. Otherwise, nothing will show up on the About section if your phone’s carrier settings are up-to-date.

Fifth solution: Remove and reinsert your SIM card.

Another easiest way of fixing cannot receive phone calls after iOS update is removing and reinserting your SIM card. After removing the SIM card, check to make sure that it has no scratches or any signs of physical damage. Here are the steps:

  1. Turn off your iPhone XS Max.
  2. Using a paper clip or the SIM eject tool, insert it into the hole to eject the tray.
  3. Gently pull the SIM tray to remove the SIM card.
  4. If your SIM card is in good condition and no signs of physical damage, put it back with the gold part facing on the tray. Make sure it is properly installed.
  5. Slowly insert the tray back into the phone until you hear a click sound indicating that is already locked.

Turn on your phone and wait until it recognizes the SIM card. Your phone will then search for available network. Once your phone acquires stable network connection, make another test call to your iPhone XS Max. If you still cannot receive phone calls after the process, move on to the next solution.

Sixth solution: Reset network settings on your iPhone XS Max.

Resetting network settings on your iPhone XS Max can also help fix phone issues triggered by network settings errors. Calling functions on your iPhone can be affected if there are misconfigured network settings or invalid settings values. May it be due to iOS update that automatically overrides the current settings or you previously configured the settings which caused conflict to your phone’s calling functions, reverting the network settings back to default or original configuration will most likely fix the issue. To get this done, here are the steps:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Select Reset network settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when prompted to continue.
  6. Then select the option to confirm network settings reset.

Once the reset is done, your phone will reboot by itself. Then you can proceed to enable the network features and options on your iPhone. Afterwards, make a test call to ensure that the cannot receive phone calls issue has already been corrected by the reset network settings process.
