Finally, with the new iOS 13 update Apple has integrated a new feature specific to women of childbearing years, the Cycle Tracking in Health App. Most women nowadays are keeping track of their menstrual cycle to be aware of any changes with their monthly cycle activities. Basically from the name itself, Cycle Tracking, allows you to keep a log of your menstrual period, tracks your fertility predictions and ovulation days relating to pregnancy to be able to plan accordingly, as well as providing you a heads up as to when your next cycle is due to begin.

The Health App on iOS 13  does not only covers the Cycle Tracking, it basically keeps track of your health on a daily basis. Health categories on the Health App includes Activity, Body Measurements, Hearing, you Heart, Mindfulness, Nutrition, Respiratory, Sleep and your Vitals. However, in this post we will just be talking about the Cycle Tracking which is vital to every woman reproductive health.

In order to get started with Cycle Tracking, it is of utmost importance to set the dates and details of your menstrual cycle right. Which means that the results will be based on the data and information gathered by the Health App according to the data you input. 

To set up Cycle Tracking:

  1. Open the Health App from the Home Screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the Browse tab.
  3. Look for Cycle Tracking from the list of categories, Tap on it.
  4. To get started follow the onscreen instructions. 

If you’re using Cycle Tracking for the very first time, you will be asked a couple of questions relating to your menstrual cycle. Questions  such as when did you last menstrual period started, how long does your menstrual period usually lasts and what is your usual menstrual cycle. Make sure to enter the correct details, tap on Next or tap on the I’m not sure option if you’re not sure of the details. 

Track you cycle by using these steps:

  1. Open the Health App from the Home Screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the Browse tab.
  3. Look for Cycle Tracking from the list of categories, Tap on it
  4. Swipe and choose the specific day you want to track 
  5. Look at the option for Cycle Log.

      Cycle log appears allowing you to log details or to look at specific information relative to your cycle. Included in cycle log are:

  • Menstruation which allows you to log details of period if you had flow or no flow, also if the flow level is light, medium or heavy
  • Symptoms such as Abdominal cramps, acne, appetite changes, bloating, breast tenderness, constipation and diarrhea.
  • Sex: if you’ve had sex and if you and your partner used protection.
  • Spotting: log on if you’ve experienced spotting. 

 6. Tap on Predictions. This is where prediction of your fertile window will appear. Although the fertile window will sometimes change when you log in your next period. If you’re wondering your these predictions are calculated, period predictions are based on the data and information you’ve logged into your cycle log. 

7. Tap on Cycles where the Cycle History is displayed.

8. Then tap on Statistics to check the date of your menstrual period, your typical length of period and your cycle length. 

If you’ve noticed on the cycle log, there are different colors on some of the dates. It  helps you check fertile window or menstrual period in an instant by just looking at the colors. What does each color on the oval mean? 

  • A light blue oval shows predictions of a six-day fertile window
  • Red Stripes on the circles shows when your next period is predicted to begin
  • Solid Red Circles shows your logged menstrual period.
  • Purple Dots shows when you logged on information.

How to customize your Cycle Tracking options:

  1. Open Health App from the Home Screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Browse tab
  3. Tap on Options from Cycle log tab
  4. Options to customize are as follows: You can opt to Toggle On or Toggle Off the options
  • Period Tracking (Period Prediction): allows Health app to use the data you’ve logged on to predict your next period.
  • Period Notification: Health  App will send a notification for upcoming periods. Notifications are preset to send at 8PM.
  • Fertility Tracking (Fertility Prediction): allows Health app to use the date you’ve logged on to predict your fertile window.
  • Fertility Notification: Health App will send notification when fertile window is on its way. Notifications are present to sent at 8PM
  • Cycle Log: you can select or deselect the options you want to appear on your cycle log (Symptoms, Sexual Activity, Ovulation test Result, Cervical Mucus Quality, Basal Body Temperature & Spotting)
  • Period length and Cycle Length: Health uses these data to predict and inform you of the predictions. 

The most important thing to remember is that as using Cycle Tracking on Health App and the predicted fertile windows should not be used as a form of birth control as these data may or may not be entirely accurate and the results from using this app should be used as a basis to diagnose a health problem.

To safeguard your privacy, all data entered will be stored in the Health App and will not be shared with anyone else.
