Problem 1: iPhone 7 Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it error, overheating issue
I have an iPhone 7. I was at the beach for about 2 hours, the phone was submerged in the water for about 2-3 seconds and all seemed fine. But after a while the phone started displaying the temperature warning sign. Tried to dry the phone with a cloth and i thought everything was fine but after a reboot i think, the phone started to display the temperature warning sign. the phone works for a few minute and after that, the temperature warning. what can i do? Solution: Hi Nikolaos. If your iPhone displays the screen that says “Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it,” it must be overheating. Electronic devices like your iPhone can overheat due a number of reasons including bad third party apps, iOS glitch, exposure to direct heat or sunlight, bad charging port, broken battery, or some unknown motherboard issue. If you did nothing different except to bring the phone to the beach, the most likely cause are heat exposure and/or other hardware malfunction. We know an iPhone 7 is water resistant but if you quickly submerged it to water, the pressure may break the protection around the vulnerable areas such as the charging port and other exposed parts causing hardware damage inside.
If you can manage it, make sure that you create a backup of all your important files in iTunes. Afterwards, wipe the phone clean with these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If prompted, enter your passcode.
- Tap Erase iPhone.
Doing the steps above returns all software settings to their known working defaults. This means that the software in the device should now work normally. Any app or iOS glitch that may have developed should now be gone. If any of them was the cause of the overheating problem, your iPhone should work fine without interrupting you with the temperature warning sign.
However, if the problem remains, that’s a sure sign that your iPhone has suffered hardware damage. It may be due to water penetrating inside, or after exposing the device to heat. An iPhone’s normal operating temperature should be between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius. If your phone was exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, it’s possible that heat may have compromised the motherboard or the battery. That said, we suggest that you contact Apple so they can check the hardware.
Problem 2: iPhone 7 won’t turn on, background image shows but won’t load iOS
Hi. 🙂 I have an iPhone 7 and about 9 hours ago, my phone battery died. I plugged my phone into my car charger for the next few hours (currently on a road trip). When I attempt to turn on my phone, each time just the background image will appear (nothing else). The image will stay nice and bright, unless I hit the side button to turn the phone off. I haven’t dropped it or anything, so it seems a bit random. Any ideas of how I can get my phone up and running again? — Melissa hrout
Solution: Hi Melissa. Your phone may have simply become unresponsive so the first thing that you should try is a soft reset. Soft reset refreshes the system just like when you restart your computer. Here’s how to do it:
- Press and hold the Power button (located on the top right edge) until “slide to power off” appears then release.
- Slide the Power switch right. Make sure that you allow several seconds for the device to power off.
- With the device powered off, press and hold the Power button until the Apple logo appears then release.
If the phone stays unresponsive, try the following:
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Continue to hold the Power button and press and hold the Volume down button located on the left side of your iPhone.
- Hold both buttons as the iPhone powers off and back on; release both buttons when the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Should your iPhone remains unresponsive, the ultimate attempt to fix it is to boot the device to DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode. This is usually useful for iOS devices that can’t interact with iTunes when the operating system is loaded, or when they can’t boot to Recovery Mode to do a full Restore.
What you intend to do is to get to DFU mode so you can do a complete recovery. If you haven’t tried it before, follow the steps below. This procedure requires a computer with iTunes installed. Make sure that iTunes runs the latest update.
- In your computer, close all active apps.
- Open iTunes.
- Turn off your iPhone. If you can’t turn it off normally, let the battery drain to 0% so the phone powers down on its own. Charge the phone for at least an hour without attempting to turn it on.
- Connect your iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
- Press and hold the Power button for at least 3 seconds.
- Press and hold the Volume Down button on the left side of the iPhone while continuing to hold the Power button. Be sure to hold both Power and Volume Down keys for 10 seconds. If Apple logo appears at this time, repeat steps 5 and 6. Apple logo should not show at all.
- Continue to hold Volume Down key for another 5 seconds. If the Plug into iTunes screen is displayed, repeat steps 5-7. Plug into iTunes screen should not show up.
- You’ll know that your phone is in DFU mode if the screen remains black. Your computer should then tell you that iTunes has detected an iPhone.
- Follow the on-screen steps in your computer to do a full recovery.
Remember, if you can’t do any of the procedures above, send the phone in.
Problem 3: How to recalibrate iPhone 7 battery, battery drain issue
My iPhone 7 plus is just new. At first, my battery can last up to 2 days. Even though I used it for 5 minutes, the percentage won’t go down but now it goes down rapidly. As time passes by, I noticed that the last time it was full charged and the standby is just nearly the same. — Noelee
Solution: Hi Noelle. Your device may need a battery calibration. Sometimes, the software can get conflicting information from the battery resulting to incorrect power level readings. To see if that’s the case, you want to do a battery calibration. Here’s how:
- Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
- Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your device and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
- After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
- Perform a warm restart by holding the Power and Home buttons simultaneously until the startup logo appears.
- Use your phone until it completely runs out of power again.
- Repeat steps 1-5.
If your phone continues to act erratically, do a full restore to take care of any possible iOS bug.
- Create a backup of your files. You can do that in a number of ways but the fastest and most effective way is by using iTunes in your PC or Mac. If you don’t want to create a backup at all, you can simply erase everything on the phone by following the steps in this link.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
- We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
- Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
- Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
- Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
- Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
- After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.
The steps above are meant to check if the problem is due to a software glitch. If nothing changes after a complete recovery or Restore, have the phone repaired or replaced.
Problem 4: iPhone 7 overheating, Home button and bottom screen getting hot
I haven’t touched my phone in about an hour and it was in a cool (not too cold) spot but the home button started to get really hot. Then the bottom of the screen and now the whole phone and I’ve only been on for 15 minutes researching. why it’s doing this? (P.S. This is the first time it’s happened).– Abbieharden
Solution: Hi Abbieharden. Did you do something different before that might cause software changes? Sometimes, installing app and/or iOS updates can lead to all sorts of problems. If you did, try to undo what you did. For example, if you did apply an app update earlier, that app may be the cause of the current problem. Consider removing the said from the phone.
Also, if you haven’t updated your device for some time now, be sure to install the latest iOS and/or app updates. Just as updates can cause some problems, it can sometimes also fix some.
We assume that you haven’t dropped the phone or physically impacted it before but if you did, there may be an on-going hardware malfunction causing the overheating issue. In this case, you must stop looking for software solutions and simply have the phone repaired or replaced.
Before sending the phone in, be sure to wipe the phone by doing the Erase All Content and Settings procedure as given above.
