Problem: iPhone XS Max won’t download any app
Hello! I just got a iPhone XS Max and it will not allow me to download any apps. It keeps telling me to enter my password and verify billing and then when I hit “done,” it pops me straight back to the App Store without downloading any apps.
Solution: Fixing this problem requires doing some troubleshooting steps. Find out what you can do below if you are unable to download or install any app.
Make sure that you’re on a wifi network before downloading. If you mainly rely on mobile data, wait until you can connect to a wifi before initiating downloads again.
Clear App Store cache
Sometimes, iPhone App Store app may not work properly due to a corrupted cache. This can result to apps not updating, apps not downloading, or other errors. To ensure that your iPhone X has good App Store cache, you can follow the steps below to refresh it:
- Open App Store app.
- Tap ten times on any of the tab buttons at the bottom.
- Alternatively, you can pull the screen down to refresh the contents of the app.
Ensure billing information is correct
Adding an inactive payment method will result to App Store issues, especially when you try to purchase something. Make sure that you enter the all billing information correctly to fix any issues. If you have another card, try using that one to see if the current payment option has a problem.
When changing a payment method or adding a credit card for example, you want to ensure that all account information match the information on file with your financial institution.
Ensure all unpaid balance are settled
If you have unpaid balance, you won’t be able to add any more apps. This can be the reason why the system is unable to install any app at this time.
If you have an unpaid bill, you can follow these steps to pay:
- Go to Settings
- Tap your name
- Tap iTunes & App Store.
- Tap your Apple ID.
- Tap View Apple ID and sign in with your Apple ID.
- Tap Purchase History.
- Find the unpaid purchase, which is likely at the top of the list, and tap it, then change your payment method.
Restart the download
Assuming there’s no problem whatsoever with your Apple ID and its associated payment method, the next best thing to do is to pause and restart the download. You can do that by firmly pressing the app being downloaded from the Home screen. You should see options to:
- Resume Download,
- Pause Download, or
- Cancel Download.
If the app download is paused, tap Resume Download. If it’s stuck, tap Pause Download, then firmly press the app again and tap Resume Download.
Or you can go directly to the App Store and tap the Updates tab to see currently downloading apps.
Some App Store issues are fixed by simply refreshing the system. To see if the problem is caused by a simple update bug, we suggest that you try to simulate the effect to disconnecting the battery to refresh the system. You can do that by following these steps:
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Then quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Finally, press and hold the Side button.
If you are able to do the regular restart, you can also do so:
- Press and hold the Side button and either the Volume buttons until the slide to power off screen appears.
- Drag the slider to turn your iPhone X completely off.
- After your iPhone turns off, press and hold the Side button again until the Apple logo appears.
Disable Restrictions on your iPhone XS Max
Your iPhone has a Restrictions feature that is mainly used to control access to certain apps. With this feature enabled, you can disable certain features of your iPhone including app downloads. To make sure this isn’t blocking your phone system from downloading app updates, follow these steps to disable app restrictions on your iPhone XS Max:
- From the Phone screen, tap on Settings.
- Select General.
- Scroll down to and tap Restrictions.
- Enter your device passcode when asked to continue.
- Navigate to the Installing Apps menu option then see if the slider is set to OFF (white). If it’s turned off, toggle the slider to the ON position (green). Doing so enables app updating feature on the phone.
After applying these settings changes, head back to the App Store then reattempt to download and install app updates. If you’re still unable to download and install app updates on your iPhone XS Max, try ruling out account-related issues next.
Sign out and back in of your Apple ID
Some users were able to successfully fix app download issues before by signing out of their Apple account, then signing back in. To do that, follow these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap your name.
- Scroll down to the bottom and tap Sign Out.
- Restart your iPhone.
To add your Apple ID afterwards:

- Tap Sign in to your iPhone at the top of the screen.
