How to fix iPhone 8 Plus not connecting automatically to home wifi

iPhones may sometimes fail to autoconnect to a previously connected wifi network for a lot of reasons. In this short troubleshooting article, learn what to do if your iPhone 8 Plus is unable to connect to your home wifi even after doing some basic troubleshooting.

Problem: iPhone 8 Plus won’t autoconnect to home wifi (previously connected)

For the last two weeks I’ve been having problems with my iPhone 8+ not automatically joining to my home wifi when in range. This is so annoying as I have to manually rejoin every time I turn on my phone. I tried your suggestions to other user with the same problem except for the router / modem. Any updates to this problem please?

Solution: If you followed our suggestions in this link except the last one about router troubleshooting, we strongly recommend that you do it to see if the problem lies on your iPhone. By erasing your iPhone’s network settings and doing a Restore, you had basically ensured that the software is cleared of any known bugs. Sure, even Apple can’t anticipate every bug that may develop out there but restoring to a previous backup state usually eliminates temporary bugs that might have escaped developers’s attention.

Troubleshoot the router

There are a number of important aspects in your router to check, as per this official Apple link. Some of them may be considered “advanced” for average users so we recommend that you get help from your ISP or router manufacturer if you can’t understand them.

Factory reset

Aside from troubleshooting the router, you can continue troubleshooting your iPhone by wiping it and returning all its software settings to their defaults. Afterwards, you can set up your iPhone as a new device (and not restore from backup) to see what happens. Here’s how to factory reset your iPhone 8 Plus:

  1. Sign out of your iCloud account (if applicable).
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  6. Tap Erase iPhone to proceed.
  7. To confirm action, tap Erase iPhone again.
  8. If prompted, enter your Apple ID password and then tap Erase.
  9. Wait for the factory reset to finish.
  10. Set up your iPhone as a new device.
  11. Observe how wifi works for a couple days.

During the observation period, be sure to also check if there’s any available iOS update to install. Some network bugs are only fixed by updates so it’s important to keep the system up-to-date all the time.

Do a DFU Mode Restore

If you want to do a more drastic type of software Restore, we suggest that you perform a DFU Mode Restore. Doing so will force the firmware to be reset to their known working default state, effectively eliminating any bug that were not removed previously. There’s no guarantee that a DFU Restore will make any difference in this case but being an Apple user, there’s only so much that you can do.

If you’re wondering how to perform a DFU Mode Restore, here’s how it goes:

  1. Connect your iPhone 8 to your computer using the USB or Lightning cable that comes with it.
  2. Open iTunes on your computer.
  3. Turn off your iPhone 8 as you normally do. In iOS 11, you can turn off your iPhone by going to Settings-> General-> Shut Down menu-> then toggle the slider to the right. Doing so turns off the iPhone.
  4. Press and hold the Side button (Power button) for 3 seconds. Then, press and hold the Volume Down button  while still holding down the Side button. Keep holding both buttons for 10 seconds.
    • If the Apple logo appears, it means that you have held the buttons for too long. If this happens, you need to go back from the very start. Otherwise, skip to the next step.
  5. Release the Side button but keep holding down the Volume Down button for about 5 seconds more.
    • If you are prompted with the Plug into iTunes screen, it means that you have entered Recovery Mode instead. So you’ll need to go back to the very first step and make sure you’re not holding the buttons for so long.
    • If your iPhone 8 screen remains black, that means your device has successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will then prompt you with an alert message saying that it has detected your iPhone and will allow it to be restored. Follow the onscreen instructions to restore your iPhone 8 in iTunes.
