How to troubleshooting iPhone XS Max with iCloud authentication error?

Before you troubleshoot your iPhone XS Max, check and make sure that the date and time settings are correct. Also ensure that your device is running the latest iOS version. The iPhone XS Max comes with a pre-installed iOS version 12 platform. You can check for new updates to download by heading to Settings-> General-> Software Update menu, then follow the onscreen prompts to download and install new iOS update available.

First solution: Sign out of your iCloud account then restart your iPhone XS Max.

Account-related issues are usually remedied by signing out and into the account. Thus this too can be considered among the first steps when dealing with iCloud authentication or unsupported Apple ID error on your device.

To sign in and out of iCloud through a web browser on your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to iCloud.com and sign into your iCloud account by entering your Apple ID and password. A six-digit verification code will then be sent to your device.
  2. Enter the verification code to confirm iCloud sign in.
  3. Go back to iCloud page and follow the onscreen prompts to continue signing into your iCloud account.
  4. If you’ve already signed into your iCloud account, all you have to do is click on the iCloud Settings menu from the iCloud page and then select the option to Sign Out.

To sign out of iCloud on your iPhone XS Max, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Tap [your name].
  3. Then scroll down to and tap the Sign Out button.

Follow the rest of the onscreen prompts to complete the sign out process. After signing out of iCloud, restart your iPhone then sign into iCloud again with these steps:

  1. Tap the option to Sign in to your [device].
  2. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  3. If you protect your account with two-factor authentication, enter the six-digit verification code and complete sign in.

Restart your iPhone after successfully signing into your iCloud account then try and see if the error is gone and that iCloud services are already working properly on your device.

Second solution: Refresh your Wi-Fi internet connection.

Network connectivity errors are also among the factors that can trigger iCloud errors to occur. To clear this out, refresh your Wi-Fi internet connection.

The simplest way to refresh Wi-Fi internet connection on your iPhone XS Max is to go to Settings-> Wi-Fi menu, then tap the switch to turn Wi-Fi off and then on again shortly. Alternatively, you can head over to Settings-> Airplane Mode menu and then toggle the Airplane Mode switch to turn it on and off again. Turning Airplane Mode on enables wireless radios or Wi-Fi features of your phone and turning it off does the opposite. So it’s like giving the features a quick restart. It turned out to offer some positive results when dealing with minor Wi-Fi connection error or network-related issues on the phone.

Third solution: Reset network settings on your iPhone XS Max.

If the prior method doesn’t help and you’re still seeing the same error when attempting to use iCloud, then you may resort to a network settings reset. Doing so clears all customized network settings on the phone including those that caused conflicts and errors. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Reset.
  4. Select Reset Network Settings option.
  5. If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm network settings reset.

When your iPhone is finished resetting the network settings, it will reboot by itself. Just wait until it boots up and then you can re-enable Wi-Fi and reconnect to the Internet.

Fourth solution: Reset your Apple ID password (optional).

The password you entered may be incorrect that’s why your previous iCloud login attempts have failed. If you’re prompted with an authentication failed error because you forgot your Apple ID password, then you can reset your password by going to apple.com then Apple ID account section. Here’s how it works:

  1. Navigate to the appleidaccount.apple.com website on your browser.
  2. Enter your Apple ID username on the given field, if necessary.
  3. Then tap the link that says, Forget Apple ID or Password?

Follow the rest of the onscreen instructions to reset or retrieve your password and then retry to login using the same Apple ID and updated password.

Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone XS Max to factory defaults then set it up  as new.

You may have to consider opting for a master reset to wipe everything from your device and then restore its default settings. Any invalid logins and account settings will then be cleared. Just don’t forget to back up all important data you saved on the phone storage beforehand so you can still recover them afterwards. If you wish to give it a go, then here’s a faster way to perform a master reset or factory reset on your iPhone XS Max:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase All Content and Settings. This is the option to master reset your iPhone XS.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm factory reset.

Your iPhone should restart by itself as soon as it’s finished erasing your device. After it reboots, the default settings are restored. By then you can proceed with the initial setup process and set up your iCloud account as like the first time you do so. Be sure to enter the correct credentials this time. If you easily forget your logins, then it won’t hurt to take note of them.

If none of the given solutions helped and you’re still getting the same iCloud authentication or Apple ID authentication error on your iPhone XS Max, then it’s time to ask more help from Apple’s iCloud Support. If the error started after installing a new iOS update and it persisted, then escalating the problem is recommended. Doing so will let Apple make further assessments and develop a fix patch if needed. While waiting for Apple to roll out necessary fixes, you can back up files to iTunes instead. Or you can also report the issue to iCloud Support for further assessments and more advanced solutions.
