How to fix iPhone 8 Plus wifi issues: internet only works when VPN is enabled

Today’s troubleshooting article will try to answer some questions regarding the #iPhone8 device. We chose three similar cases that were reported for the last few days

Problem #1: What to do if iPhone 8 wifi only works when VPN is enabled

Hi. I have been facing some issues with my iphone. I don’t know if its the phone or the network. While searching for solutions i came across your page and thought would try contacting you.

I live in my company accomodation, wifi is provided by them. On my iphone the wifi does not work although connected. It works only when i turn on the VPN. If the vpn is off, its like im not connected to the internet. My other phone (samsung) is also connected to the same network and my laptop too. I don’t see any issues there. Only on my iphone. Is there something i need to do in settings or any fix you can suggest?

Solution: There’s either a problem with your iPhone’s wifi functionality or your company’s wifi network has additional requirements such as a working VPN in order to allow internet connection. To see if it’s a device issue (iPhone 8), these are the troubleshooting steps that you can do:

Verify if your iPhone’s wifi works

Try connecting to a known working wifi and see if your iPhone’s wifi work normally. If it does, proceed to the rest of the troubleshooting steps below.

Forget, then connect to wifi

This often solves most wifi connectivity issues. In case you don’t know how to do this, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Home screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the blue “i” or information icon right next to the Wi-Fi network you want to delete or forget.
  5. Tap the option to Forget this Network. If prompted, tap Delete this network to confirm action.

Wait until the network has been successfully deleted then reboot your iPhone. After the reboot, turn on Wi-Fi and set up your wireless network again.

Reset network settings

This troubleshooting steps will return all network configurations of your iPhone 8 back to their defaults. Before you do the steps below, be sure to take note of all wifi passwords and VPN configuration to avoid being inconvenienced later on. Resetting your iPhone’s network settings will erase settings for:

  • Wifi
  • VPN
  • Cellular network
  • Bluetooth

Your phone should still be able to connect to your carrier’s network after this troubleshooting step.

To reset network settings:

  1. Tap Settings to open the app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Reset Network Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the device password.
  6. Confirm action.

Factory reset

Should nothing work at this point, you can opt to wipe the entire phone and restore its software information to defaults. This will delete all user data such as photos, videos, messages, etc. so be sure to back those up ahead of time to your computer or the cloud.

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device to continue.
  6. Tap the option to confirm action.

Wait until your iPhone completes the master reset your iPhone will reboot in factory defaults settings. By then you may proceed with the initial setup process and use your iPhone as new.

Talk to your company IT

Should all the device troubleshooting above won’t still allow you to connect to your company’s wifi, be sure to talk to the network administrator. Each wifi network has its own security configuration and there may be something that has to be done to allow your particular iPhone to use your company’s wifi network.

Problem #2: What to do if iPhone 8 wifi has no internet connection

I have an iPhone 8 with iOS 11.4.1. I can connect to my wifi network but cannot access the internet. Other phones and devices in our house can. It was working but stopped. I have tried all suggestions: restart phone, reboot phone, reset phone, factory reset phone, power down all network devices, and done this multiple times. My 3G and 4G works. I am now stuck with partially loaded apps so cannot even try email or browser.  Can I download rest of apps through 4G to at least get the programs reloaded? They don’t seem to reload from iTunes. Any kind suggestions, please? You have a great site. 

Solution: If you don’t mind incurring additional cost in redownloading all apps via mobile data, then go ahead.

If you want to fix your wifi issue though, refer to our solutions above for Problem #1. If you are not the administrator of your home wifi, then talk to the one in-charge. He or she may have changed some router settings that might have blocked your device from the internet.

Problem #3: How to fix iPhone 8 Plus calling issues: voice sounds slow or fast randomly

My issue appears to be with my iPhone 8 Plus. I’ve not tried anything to correct it (because I don’t know where to possibly start) and I haven’t found anything online with the same issue. I first noticed it when speaking to my wife through Bluetooth in the work van, the conversation would either slow down to a slow deep voice or speed up to a chipmunk style super quick or recently, it repeated a few words in a sentence i.e. “I was walking walking walking walking my dog and the and the and the rain started” It’s all very strange.

At first we thought it was the Bluetooth in the van making it happen, but while speaking to my bank earlier, it did it twice. And by “it” I mean all of these issues, it sped up, slowed down and repeated the words (was the first time the word repeating had happened or that I’d actually noticed at least). The iPhone 8 Plus is about a year and half old, it had the screen replaced by Apple, and now has a giant case on to protect it. We have a usb adaptor that we charge our phones off of occasionally and that makes the screen responsive in a very strange way, it stops the finger print scanner working (on the home button) and when you touch the screen, makes it as tho you’re touching other points on the screen, so it messes around with it all massively. I don’t know if this is a factor or not but trying to give you as much information as possible. It’s also quite intermittent so even on a phone call to you, there’s no guarantee that the issue would be replicated. I had it over to you to see if you have any ideas on a solution.

Solution: There could be other reasons that’s causing the weird calling issue so you should try to narrow them down first. You can start by removing the Bluetooth device from the picture. Once you’ve disconnected your Bluetooth, be sure to turn the Bluetooth off on your iPhone as well. Then, try to replicate the issue for as long as you can without using the phone’s Bluetooth functionality. Observe the phone for at least 24 hours and see how calling works. Try to make as many calls as possible to see if the problem remains or not. We understand the issue may occur randomly but this is one of the things that you can do in this situation.

Another troubleshooting step that you can try is to clear your phone’s network settings. Doing so will erase all network settings such as cellular configurations, wifi, Bluetooth, and VPNs. Many iPhone users found this troubleshooting step effective in fixing network issues so hopefully this will work.

Should nothing change after clearing the network settings, the next good thing that you must do is factory reset. Refer to the steps above on how to do it. See to it that you back your files up before you reset the device. Once the phone has been factory reset, set it up as a new device first, then observe how calling works. If there’s no change, it’s time that you contact your network operator so they can help you troubleshoot the issue.

Your other issues may or may not be related to the first one. If the rest of the problems won’t get resolved after you factory reset the device, you should send the phone to Apple so they can repair or replace it.
