How to fix your iPhone 8 that’s stuck at Apple logo screen
If your iPhone 8 can’t seem to go past the Apple logo screen, that only means one thing: something is preventing the system from loading iOS normally. In our interactions with users for several years, we know that the most common reasons for this problem include:
- unknown iOS bug following an update
- using an iOS beta version that has already expired
- problems with jailbreaking
- or hardware malfunction
To see if the issue is fixable on your end, you must do the steps below.
Solution #1: Force reboot your iPhone 8
The first thing that you want to do is to see if you can restart your iPhone by simulating a “battery pull.” If you’ve been an iPhone user all along, you’ll probably not quite get the concept but if you’ve tried using a phone with a removable battery pack before, then you’ll know that it’s the easiest way to unfreeze a device. Since your iPhone 8 does not have a removable battery, Apple designated a certain hardware button combination to force the system to reboot, as if you physically disconnected the battery. This is an effective way to restart a device that has become unresponsive, has a temporary black screen, or in some instances, being unable to load iOS.
To force reboot your iPhone 8, follow these steps: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
Solution #2: Restore from a backup (optional)
The bad thing about the issue you’re having is the fact that there’s not much that you can do about it. While the phone is not totally dead, it doesn’t allow you to tweak the software either. This means that you’ll most likely be forced to do drastic solutions, like the ones from here on now. Because you’ll not be able to load iOS normally, there’s no way to create a backup of your personal data like photos, videos, etc. Whatever you do from here on out, you’ll lose them for good.
The good news is, if you’ll be able to restore the phone from your backup, it will probably work normally again.
Before you can attempt to restore from a backup, you need to wipe the phone first. Here’s how to do that:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If prompted, enter your passcode.
- Tap Erase iPhone.
Now that your iPhone has been wiped clean, you can either restore it as a new device, or restore it from a backup. We suggest that you do the latter.
How to restore your iPhone 8 via iTunes
The following steps will restore contents including apps and contacts. A Mac or Windows computer with the latest version of iTunes installed is required in this process.
- Go to your computer and open iTunes.
- Connect your iPhone to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
- If prompted, enter your device passcode or click on the option to Trust This Computer and then follow the onscreen instructions.
- Locate your iPhone 8 from the list that appears in the iTunes screen and then click on it.
- Go to the Summary panel, and then click on Restore [your device name].
- Click on Restore again to confirm action.
- iTunes will then begin to erase your device and then installs the latest iOS firmware. Just wait until the entire restore process is complete. After your iPhone restores to factory settings, you can now set it up as new or restore from a backup.
How to restore your iPhone 8 from a backup in iCloud
Apple has designed its iOS devices with options to restore from an iCloud backup or using iTunes. To restore your iPhone from an iCloud backup, you need to erase all of its contents before you can restore from your backup. Here’s how it’s done:
- Turn on your iPhone 8.
- Wait for the Hello screen to show up. If you already set up your device, you need to erase it before restoring from an iCloud backup.
- Follow the onscreen setup steps until you get to the Apps & Data screen.
- On the Apps & Data screen, tap Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Sign in to iCloud with your Apple ID credentials.
- Select a backup to use. You can refer to the date and size of each backup file and then pick the most relevant. After selecting the backup file, the transfer begins.
- If prompted with a message requiring a newer version of iOS, follow the onscreen instructions to update. Otherwise, skip to the next step.
- If prompted, sign in to your Apple ID account to restore apps and purchases. Otherwise, skip this step and sign in later.
- Wait until the progress bar appears and completes. It can take a while to finish depending on the size of the backup and the network connection speed. The progress will pause if you disconnect from Wi-Fi too soon and resumes once you reconnect.
Solution #3: DFU Restore your iPhone 8
If your device fails to restore from backup, then the only other solution that you can do on your end is to restore it via DFU Mode. Here’s how:
- In your computer, close all active apps.
- Open iTunes.
- Turn off your iPhone. If you can’t turn it off normally, let the battery drain to 0% so the phone powers down on its own. Charge the phone for at least an hour without attempting to turn it on.
- Connect your iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
- Press and hold the Power button for at least 3 seconds.
- Press and hold the Volume Down button on the left side of the iPhone while continuing to hold the Power button. Be sure to hold both Power and Volume Down keys for 10 seconds. If Apple logo appears at this time, repeat steps 5 and 6. Apple logo should not show at all.
- Continue to hold Volume Down key for another 5 seconds. If the Plug into iTunes screen is displayed, repeat steps 5-7. Plug into iTunes screen should not show up.
- You’ll know that your phone is in DFU mode if the screen remains black. Your computer should then tell you that iTunes has detected an iPhone.
- Follow the on-screen steps in your computer to do a full recovery.
Solution #4: Let Apple fix the issue
Should nothing work despite having tried our suggestions above, you should contact Apple so they can physically check the phone and repair it. While Apple repairs are top notch, they can be relatively more expensive than your regular local technician so be sure to prepare to pay for the fees if the device is out of warranty. Apple may also refuse to repair your device if you tampered with the hardware or software in any way. Of course, if you did nothing like jailbreak the device or physically damage it, you can go ahead with the repair.
