iPhone 7 getting really hot, getting stuck. I have turned off bluetooth, wifi; closed all apps, this still happens. It’s pretty full and doesn’t have latest upgrade to iOS. I deleted many apps. Photos disappear & begin downloading again. Last thing was phone was off and dead and kept overheating so much I got scared and put it in fridge in a bag for a few minutes. Then it started overheating again while off. Mostly upper part by the camera and off button and spreading down. It got incredibly hot to the point where i was afraid it could explode if it got hotter.

Solution: Hi Emtzg123. Overheating and freezing, when present at the same time, is almost always a hardware issue. To see if that’s the case, you must try to do every possible software troubleshooting for your device. If none of them works, that’s a clear confirmation of our hunch — that bad hardware is to blame.
To get started with software troubleshooting, follow these solutions:
Minimize running apps
The more apps that run actively and in the background, the higher the chance of issues happening. We don’t know how warm or hot your mobile becomes but if it reaches the point where it’s too uncomfortable to touch, that’s never a good sign. To see if it’s caused by an app, close all apps by doing the steps below:
- Double-click the Home button to show your most recently uses apps.
- Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close.
- Swipe up on the app’s preview to close the app.
By design, iOS should manage how apps automatically so manual force closing of apps is hardly needed. But since you seem to have an unusual overheating issue, you should do the steps above for all open apps.
Your iPhone, like you, works best in room temperature. If you subject it to temperature extremes — too cold or too hot — it can suffer from permanent hardware damage that may manifest in freezing or overheating. The battery is sensitive to ambient temperature. Ideally, it should only be used between 62° to 72° F (16° to 22° C). You should avoid exposing it to heat or ambient temperature of over 95° F (35° C). if exposed to heat above 95° F (35° C), it can succumb to permanent damage. The same is true if the battery is exposed to too much cold.
Avoid streaming graphics-heavy contents for too long
Your iPhone is designed to play videos. However, playing videos for hours at a stretch can cause too much heat inside as the system goes on overdrive to keep up with the demand. The processor can generate heat that may go beyond your phone’s tolerance limits. When this happens, freezing and overheating are the usual symptoms. To prevent overheating the system, let the phone cool off for a couple of hours.
Turn off games for the time being
Like watching too much videos, heavy gaming can cause problems including overheating and freezing. Depending on the complexity of a game, some may require more resources than others. The processor may be stretched to its limits the longer you’re in a game so if you notice that the phone is already starting to become warm to touch, ease off a bit. Let your iPhone cool off before resuming.
Unknown software glitch
Sometimes, an operating system may develop a problem due to its poor coding or because of other external factors. To see if you have an iOS-related issue, make sure to install app and iOS updates. If you’ve already did that before contacting us, consider doing a Restore. Here’s how:
- Create a backup of your files. You can do that in a number of ways but the fastest and most effective way is by using iTunes in your PC or Mac. If you don’t want to create a backup at all, you can simply erase everything on the phone by following the steps in this link.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
- We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
- Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
- Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
- Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
- Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
- After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.
Remember, overheating is just a symptom. If it happens often and even when the device is not being actively used, that’s a sign of a hardware malfunction. We don’t know the history of your device so we can’t say for sure but it may have something to do with the battery. You mentioned that the top part overheated even after you turned the phone off so the battery is probably shorted. To fix your issue, a technician needs to check the hardware. Contact Apple so they can help with the repair.
For future reference, make sure not to put any electronic device like your iPhone in a fridge. The Lithium-based battery in it won’t work and can get damaged if exposed to temperature below freezing. If your iPhone overheats, what you need to do is to turn it off and let it cool off in a room temperature for at least 2 hours. Placing it in a fridge is a sure way to killing the battery, and potentially other components.
Problem 2: iPhone 7 Plus with cracked screen issue
Hi. i have a problems and i just needed few answers too. it started with cracked screen. I took it to ubreakifix it. (iPhone 7plus) passed all the tests. nothing else was wrong with my phone plus. the screen has been broken for a month before i decided to take it to get fixed.. well they replaced screen and something went wrong on their end so they put my broken screen back on. i told them that the looting didn’t start until they replaced screen. he acted as if he knew he was in the wrong!! so my question is could it be possible that he messed my phone up more, can it be fixed? without deleting everything on device. or is it no point of return. — Paris Ramirez
Solution: Hi Paris. Your situation right now is one of reasons why we almost always recommend that you let Apple fix hardware problems. Third party technicians may or may not have sufficient training and experience to handle iPhone repair so there’s always the chance of them messing up the system more than it already is. Depending on the original problem as well as the additional damage it may have incurred from the hands of the technician, your phone may or may not be fixed. If you think the shop where you brought the device to messed up your iPhone, make sure to talk to the manager and see if someone with better qualifications can attend to your phone. Otherwise, we suggest that you bring it to a different repair shop to seek a second opinion. Bringing the device to an Apple service center is out of the question as they will not repair a tampered iPhone so your phone lies on independent service centers.
Problem 3: iPhone 7 touch functionality not working after repair
My iPhone 7 worked perfectly fine until I dropped it on the road and cracked my screen. Even then, it still worked. After Apple replaced my screen, I started having trouble with the touch part of it. It’s really unresponsive. It takes takes me 5 minutes to send an 8- word text. I’ve been dealing with this since May 13th (the day I took into Apple). Recently, my phone Just randomly wont connect to our home wifi. It says incorrect password and only shows one bar, but it works for every other device in the house. Solution: Hi Michelledfwu. Touch functionality is made possible by the digitizer, the thin layer of sensor on top of the monitor. If touch functionality hardware works normally after Apple replaced the screen, you should tell them so. It’s possible that repair was not done properly, or the replacement component is substandard. Make sure that you tell Apple of the digitizer problem as soon as possible.
For your wifi issue, we recommend that you reset all network settings and see how it works afterwards. Here’s how:
