Hello and welcome to our new #iPhoneX troubleshooting article. This one is going to focus on what an end user can do when faced with a frustrating issue — an unresponsive iPhone X screen.
Our years of experience with iPhones gives us a good impression of Apple’s top product. And one of the most reliable components in these phones we had and have is the display. iPhone screens are top notch and generally reliable. In majority of cases where we encounter bad screen issues, the main reason is physical damage, which means that careless users dropped their device, hit them with something really stupidly hard material, or got them wet.
With the iPhone X, the same screen reliability is true. Still, there are some cases wherein users report that their iPhone X screen has suddenly become unresponsive for some unknown reason. If you’ve encountered such a situation, then perhaps this troubleshooting article can help you.

How to troubleshoot iPhone X unresponsive screen issue
Below are the possible solutions that might help you regain the normal function of your iPhone X. Keep in mind that these solutions are targeted towards possible software-related causes. If you dropped your iPhone or got it wet, then the unresponsive screen is probably due to that. In that case, we won’t be able to help you at all. We suggest that you bring your device right away to Apple so they can examine and repair it if necessary.

Solution #1: Undo possible things that might have caused the problem
The iPhone X is a great device overall. It’s hardware and software are undeniably amazing but there’s no perfect system. iOS is a complicated software environment with plenty of potential points of failure. If you take care of your device properly but the screen just stopped working on its own, it’s possible that there may be a unique variable in your device that triggered the issue. This can be anything, including the possible tweaks that you may have done prior to noticing the problem. If you are the adventurous type when it comes to software or apps, try to retrace the things you may have done differently on your iPhone X to see if one of them may have caused the problem. It may be a new app you installed lately, or an incorrect jailbreak procedure you tried. Whatever it is, try to think hard about it. Jailbreaking a device is one sure way to make it unstable. We know a lot of people think jailbreaking their iPhone is cool and offers way more options than a non-jailbroken one. If you’re one of them, make sure that the jailbreak procedure you followed is not buggy or problematic. If you can’t figure that out, simply bring the software state of your iPhone X back to stock.
Solution #2: Verify if recently installed app is making the screen freeze
Was your iPhone X screen working normally before you installed a new app? If it was, then most probably that app is incompatible or buggy. Try uninstall the said app and see what happens. Obviously, this option is only possible if you can still use the screen on your iPhone X. If it’s totally unresponsive and you can’t uninstall an app using your phone, you can try uninstalling it via iTunes. We do hope though that your iTunes has not updated to 12.7 yet at this time as Apple removed the iOS App Store and iOS app management in that iteration.
Solution #3: Force reboot your iPhone X
If your iPhone X touchscreen works from time to time and you never spilled water or liquid to the phone, or dropped it accidentally, then most probably your screen issue is due to a software bug or a bad app. In that case, restarting your iPhone X may help. To do that, simply press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
Solution #4: DFU Recovery
If force rebooting your iPhone X won’t fix the issue at all, the next best thing to do is to perform a DFU (Default Firmware Update) restore. This is a drastic solution and will erase unsaved personal data but it’s the best solution left for you if the screen has become totally dead. To perform a DFU recovery, follow these steps:
- Connect your device to a computer and open iTunes.
- While your device is connected, force it to restart by pressing and quickly releasing the Volume Up button. Then, press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Afterwards, press and hold the Side button until you see the recovery-mode screen.
- Don’t release the buttons when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.
- When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
- Wait for your iPhone to download the software. If this download will take more than 15 minutes, your iPhone will exit recovery mode. In this case, you’ll need to repeat steps 2 and 3.
Solution #5: Contact Apple
Should nothing work after doing the solutions above, you can assume that bad hardware is to blame. As mentioned above, iPhone screens are generally reliable and they only go bad usually following an accidental drop or exposure to water or elements. In this situation, the only way to fix the problem is to replace the screen. While you can replace the screen yourself, there’s a chance that you’ll do more damage to your device than fix it. And remember, even if you’ll find a good do-it-yourself (DIY) guide on how to replace the screen, you’ll still have to buy the repair kit and replacement screen. So, it still will cost you something. Also, Apple will not repair an iPhone that’s been tampered with. If they’ll find out that you tried to put in a non-compatible component, they’ll right away refuse to even look at your iPhone.
The best way to go for you is to bring the phone to your nearest Apple Service Center so a qualified technician can take a look at it. You’ll still probably need to pay for the repair even if your iPhone is still within the warranty period but you can be assured that the repair will be done by a properly trained technician.
