Since getting iPhone 7 with IOS 11 text messaging has been awful. 1. I often create the bulk of any message by voice. In the past, when inevitable misprinted words appeared I could simply tap on the word and text mode would appear for me to manually repair/replace. Now when I tap on word I am lucky to get right location and then mode stays in voice forcing me to then tap the keyboard icon so I can finally correct the error. 2. Solution: Hi Barry. iOS dictation in iPhones is not a perfect feature, as you may now realize. It can be affected by a number of external factors in order to achieve acceptable accuracy. Some of the things that can affect it includes:
- noise from nearby surroundings
- position of the microphone when speaking
- state of your internet connection
- the way you speak
- accuracy of autocorrect feature
Reduce noise when using iOS dictation
Ambient noise can cause unnecessary interference that might distort the sound of your voice when it reaches the microphone. Your iPhone’s dictation feature is not smart enough yet to filter out irrelevant noise from your surroundings. If you use dictation in a noisy place, don’t expect your phone to convert your spoken words into texts accurately.
Be aware of your phone’s microphones location
Your iPhone 7 has 4 microphones — two are located at the bottom beside the lightning connector port, one near the headphone jack, and the other between the flash and iSight camera. Ideally, said microphone locations should be able to pick your voice up when you’re holding your iPhone normally when dictating your texts.
Use dictation feature on wifi only
If you’ve noticed, you can’t dictate your text when your iPhone is not connected to the internet either via cellular network or wifi. The reason for that is simple: in order to effectively transcribe your words, your iPhone’s operating system needs help from a remote server from Apple. Your iPhone is like a child. The more you engage with it, the more likely it will learn along the way. Its autocorrect feature can take some time to get used to how you speak and the words you commonly use. If it’s your first time to use this particular iPhone 7, it may take a few weeks for its autocorrect feature to recognize your words more accurately. We’re not saying it’s dumb but the more you use it, the more likely that it can remember what you mean when you speak.
Out-of-order text replies
One common reason why text messages becomes disoriented can be due to incorrect date and time. Make sure that your phone’s date and time is set to follow your network’s. To do that, just go under Settings>General>Date and time and make sure that Set automatically slider is set to the right.

I have continually searched online to find a solution and have came up with none. Every time I go into my Messages to respond to a text, it crashes and kicks me out without letting me respond. I have deleted apps, soft reboot, turned off my iPhone, turned off certain things, deleted the message chain in particular and it is still not working. I have tried everything, except a factory reset because I’d rather not resort to that unless it was the very last thing I could possibly do. I’m even going to try to call the AT&T place to see if there is anything they could do. Although developers try their best to minimize the chances of their products from developing bugs, problems can still occur from time to time. Knowing the exact reason why an app crashes is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Even developers of a particular a problematic app can be hard pressed to determine each and every reason for a sudden crash. What needs to be done in this case is to narrow down possible causes by doing the steps below.
Restart your iPhone. Minor bugs are often fixed by a simple restart. Don’t skip it.
Close, then relaunch Messages. Like restarting your device, quitting the app may change the dynamics of the system and eliminate possible bug that has developed. To quit Messages, tap the Home button quickly two times. This will pull up the multitasking screen. Look for the Messages preview and swipe it up to close it. Then, go back to the Home screen and launch Messages again.

How to restore your iPhone 7 from iCloud backup
- Before you can start to backup from iCloud, you must perform a factory reset first. If you want to keep the current setup of your phone, make sure that you create a backup of it first via iCloud or iTunes or both. Then, once you’ve created your backup, you can go ahead and erase all the content of your iPhone by going under Settings>General> Reset>Erase All Content and Settings.
- After doing the Erase All Content and Settings procedure, restart the phone.
- Follow the instructions on the screen until you reach the Apps & Data screen.
- Tap Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Sign in to iCloud with your Apple ID.
- If you have multiple backups created before, pick an older date. Once you’ve chosen a backup, the transfer should begin. If needed, follow screen instructions to update to a new operating system (iOS) first.
- If prompted, sign in to your Apple ID account to restore apps. Alternatively, you can skip signing in by tapping Skip this Step option so you can sign in later.
- Wait for the phone to finish downloading the backup files. It may take several minutes depending on your network speed and the backup file size. If you have a lot of apps and content (photos, videos, music, etc.), it may take a long time for them to be downloaded into your device. We suggest that you connect to a strong wifi network to hasten the process. Don’t worry, once you disconnect from wifi, download process will be paused but will automatically be resumed once you’re reconnected.
How to restore your iPhone 7 from iTunes backup
- In your computer, make sure that it runs the latest operating system version. iTunes app must also be up-to-date. This iTunes app should be the one that you used to back your phone up before.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
- If prompted, enter the device passcode or tap Trust this Computer in your iPhone.
- We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
- Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
- In the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore Backup button). Update the software if you get the message that says iOS is too old.
- If you have multiple backups created before, pick an older date. Once you’ve chosen a backup, the transfer should begin.
- Confirm by clicking on Restore button. If prompted, enter the password for your encrypted backup.
- Wait for a few moments while iTunes syncs your iPhone. Once the sync is done, you can disconnect the iPhone.
