This is already Apple’s fourth milestone in iOS 11 update, which will likely serve as the link between the iOS 11 and iOS 12 upgrade. Unfortunately, not all those who first implemented the new update have ended up with a smooth and flawless transition. In fact, some owners of the iPhone 8 who have tested the 11.4 beta have reported performance issues like sluggishness, random freezes, and others with their iPhone that’s stuck on an Apple logo. These are apparently deemed among other update glitches that need some further debugging. How to troubleshoot iPhone 8 that keeps freezing and lagging
Before you begin troubleshooting, check your iPhone’s internal memory and make sure it has sufficient storage space. While the iPhone 8 sports a huge memory capacity, there are some factors like rogue apps and malware that may use up a significant amount of memory. As a result, the device may be running out of memory. This is when performance issues instigate. Among the usual symptoms are lags, freezes, and random restarts. To rule this out from the possible triggers, check and manage internal memory of your iPhone. If everything appears good and your iPhone still has a lot of free storage, continue to troubleshoot software errors on your iPhone that might have triggered the existing symptoms.
First solution: Force close background apps on your iPhone 8.
Background apps may crash or go rogue after implementing a new platform or system interface. Background apps are apps you’ve used recently and not closed, which means they are still running in the background. In this case, force closing background apps can help. Here’s how it’s done:
- Press the Home button twice quickly. Doing so will open a new screen containing a list of all recently used apps. These apps are still open and running in the background.
- Swipe up on an app to close it.
See if that fixes your device. If that doesn’t help, then continue to the next workaround.
Second solution: Force restart your iPhone 8.
If your iPhone 8 is not responding or stuck, you need to perform a force restart. The process is similar to a soft reset but done using the hardware keys. This will not affect any data and personal information stored on the internal memory of your iPhone, so no need for backups. There’s a new way to force restart an iPhone 8. Here’s how:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Finally, press and hold the Power/Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Allow your device to finish rebooting and then see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise, move on to the next method.
Third solution: Install pending app updates on your iPhone 8.
When a new software version is implemented, app developers also roll out updates for their respective apps to remain compatible and work smoothly with the new platform. While updates can be installed automatically when auto-update is enabled, there are times when certain app updates won’t install unless triggered manually. That said, check for any pending app updates to download and install on your device. Here’s how:
- Tap the App Store icon from the Home screen.
- While on the App Store main screen, tap the Updates icon at the bottom right. A list of apps with pending updates then populates.
- Tap Update next to an app to install app update individually.
- If multiple app updates are available, tap the Update All button to install all app updates simultaneously.
Don’t forget to reboot your iPhone after installing all app updates to make sure everything is properly implemented. Doing so will also prevent the device from going rogue.
Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone 8.
Updates can override your current settings automatically. Should this happens, the result could either be good or bad. As resolution, you can revert the settings back to their previous configuration. But the challenge would be to determine which settings or options to re-configure. As alternative solution, you can reset all settings on your iPhone instead. Doing so will erase the current system settings on the phone and restores the default or original values. This won’t affect data saved on your iPhone’s internal memory, thus it won’t result to data loss. Here’s how it’s done:
- Tap Settings.
- Tap General.
- Scroll to and tap Reset.
- Select Reset all settings from the given options.
- If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
- Confirm system settings reset.
Your iPhone will then instigate the reset process. After the reset, reboot your iPhone to apply the recent changes and refresh the system.
Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone 8 in iTunes.
Your last resort if none of the above solutions worked would be to perform a system restore or iOS restore. To get started, you will need to secure a Windows or Mac computer with the latest operating system and iTunes software installed. There are two types of iOS restore you can choose from — recovery mode restore and DFU mode restore.
You may opt to carry out a recovery mode restore first. In this process, you will put your iPhone 8 in recovery mode and then restore iOS in iTunes. Here’s how to restore your iPhone 8 in recovery mode using iTunes:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer using the supplied Lightning cable.
- When your iPhone is recognized in iTunes, do a force restart but do not release the buttons when the Apple logo appears. You will need to wait until it gets to the Connect to iTunes screen. [Refer to the above steps on how to force restart an iPhone 8].
- If you’re prompted with the option to Restore or Update, select Restore to trigger iTunes to reinstall iOS and download the software for your device. Your device will exit the Connect to iTunes screen (recovery mode) if the download takes longer than 15 minutes. - After the Restore completes, you can set up your iPhone.
If your iPhone 8 still lags, freezes, or gets stuck on the Apple logo after performing a recovery mode restore, then you may consider opting for a DFU mode restore. This is the most in-depth type of system restore you can do on an iPhone. It allows your device to communicate with iTunes on a computer without loading the operating system.
