Today’s troubleshooting episode covers sound problems on the #iPhone8 and #iPhone8Plus. We know that there’s a lot of potential sound issues that can happen in this device so we hope that we answer at least 4 of them in this post.

Problem 1: iPhone 8 sound for text dictation feature can’t be turned off
I have the iPhone 8 and I’m wondering if it’s possible to either turn off or turn down the loud chime that goes off every time we press the microphone button to record text. The chime also goes off again when we are through recording. It doesn’t change anything when I turn down the volume on the side of the phone. The chime remains unusually loud. Is there a place in the settings to turn that off? Thank you. — Karlsarpalius
Solution: Hi Karlsarpalius. Unfortunately, there’s no way to disable the sound the precedes and concludes dictation feature. There’s no option under Settings that you can change to turn it off at all. There’s also no app that can be installed to manage sound schemes in your phone so you’re basically left with what you have.
We think Apple engineers made the sound unchangeable in order to maintain the same sound level in all situations. It’s a matter of design so unless Apple has a change of heart regarding this particular feature (which we doubt), you just have to accept this sound setup for dictation.
Problem 2: iPhone 8 does not capture voice during calls, other end cannot hear during calls
On my iPhone 8, people cannot hear me when I called them or they called me. But I can hear them clearly. However, when I connect to car speaker using Bluetooth, they can hear me well. No issue on carrier cause when I changed my SIM card to other phones, people can hear me clearly. Please advise what is the problem on this iPhone 8 and how to fix it. Solution: Hi Mariam. There must be an issue with your device’s microphone. The speaker is a separate component from the microphone so it should still continue to work even if the microphone has stopped working. This is the reason why you can still hear callers but they can’t hear you in return. In other words, your phone is no longer picking up your voice due to a problematic microphone. Although we’re very positive that this is the case, you can check it yourself by doing the following steps:
- Find the Voice Memos app and open it.
- Tap the record button to let your iPhone’s microphone capture any sound. We suggest that you try to record your voice as if you’re simulating a call.
- When done recording, tap the red record button again.
- Tap Done.
- Name the recorded sound with anything you like.
- Now that you have saved it, try to tap on the file and listen to it. If you hear nothing or simply static, you can bet the microphone is not working.
To see if the microphone problem is due to a software glitch, do a factory reset and see what happens next. To factory reset your iPhone 8, follow these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If prompted, enter your passcode.
- Tap Erase iPhone.
Factory reset will erase all user data like photos, videos, etc. Make sure that you back them up in your computer or in the cloud before you proceed.
After you’ve factory reset the device, do the voice memos test again. If the result is the same, contact Apple to have the phone repaired or replaced.
Problem 3: iPhone 8 microphone not working during voice calls
I bought a refurbished straight talk iPhone 8 at a Walmart store and found no problems with it until I attempted to make a call and found the other person could not hear me. They can hear me on FaceTime and when I put myself on speaker but any other time whatever I say just echoes back to me. I have tried turning on noise cancellation and cleaning the microphone and have had no success. Is it possible to fix the phone without sending it back? — Diana Crummett
Solution: Hi Diana. If your microphone works normally on Facetime but not when doing a voice call over your carrier’s network, there may be a network setting that’s missing or misconfigured in your device. What that is is for your carrier to figure out. If you are in a GSM network, try to turn off your phone and reinsert your SIM card properly. If possible, try using another compatible SIM card and see if you’ll have the same problem. If you do, that means that there’s something wrong with the phone’s network settings.
On the other hand, if the second SIM card works normally and your voice calls are normal, which means that your callers can hear you over a cellular network, then you either have a SIM card error or an account issue. Make sure to talk to your carrier about it.
Problem 4: iPhone 8 proximity sensor not working
I have an iPhone 8. In the last few weeks, I have been having problems while using the speaker on calls. While in a call, my phone will go to mute several times and then will bounce to the contact list and start roaming on its own and randomly dial and call another person on my contact list and disconnects the call I am on. This is very frustrating while trying to continue on a call that I was on. I have been searching for answers but haven’t received any that relates to the problem I have for a solution. — Ginny
Solution: Hi Ginny. Does this happen when your phone is near your face during calls? If the answer to that is yes, then the most likely reason is a faulty proximity sensor. This sensor, located at the top of the front speaker, is responsible for turning off the screen when your face is near it during calls. If this sensor no longer does its job properly during calls, it can allow the screen to stay on. So, when part of your face hits the screen, it may hit active buttons like the speaker or any random numbers.
To test if the proximity sensor is working or not, do these steps:
- Place your iPhone on a table.
- Dial a number. Make sure that the other party answers your call and not reject or drop it.
- Once you’re in an active call, hover your hand (about a centimeter) over the top portion of the screen where the small holes are. One of them is the proximity sensor. If the screen won’t turn off while hovering your hand over sensor, that tells you that the sensor is busted.
We don’t know the full history of your iPhone 8 but usually, these are the four common reasons why a proximity sensor may stop working:
- Software glitch. iOS is a very complicated software environment and Apple engineers cannot iron out all bugs out there so there’s a chance that your problem may be caused by one of them. To see if there’s a bug with the current software setup you have, try to restore the phone as a new device and see what happens.
- Repair gone wrong. Sometimes, poorly done repair or screen replacement can damage this sensor. If your phone was repaired recently, then the technician must not have done a good job.
- Physical impact. Hitting your iPhone with something hard, or dropping it from a considerable height can lead to hardware malfunction. The unnecessary shock from a hit can knock some components like the proximity sensor.
- Manufacturer defect. If the first three items don’t apply at all, then it’s possible that your iPhone may have a manufacturing defect. This does not happen all the time but with millions of iPhone 8 made, there can be a handful that may not receive the same level of care or quality check. In this case, you need to contact Apple so they can repair or replace your device.
