How to Use Your iPhone as a Webcam for Your PC or Mac with These Apps

iPhones are known for their excellent cameras—both rear and front. The image quality they deliver is much better than what you get from the average webcam. It would then make sense to use your iPhone as a webcam for your PC or Mac, instead of buying a separate device. This is function is especially useful if you own a desktop PC that does not have a webcam.  The good news is that you can do just that with these two apps. Both WebCamera and EpocCam allow you to use your iPhone as a webcam for Skype or live streaming, and they both work in the same way.

WebCamera

Our first app, WebCamera, delivers the best image quality out of all the webcam apps that we’ve tested, and it costs just $4.99—much less than what you would pay even for a no-name webcam from China. What’s more, the app uses your local Wi-Fi connection, which means that you can easily move your phone around and creatively position it just the way you like.

The app supports most messaging applications, including Skype, and it also works with video production software such as Boinx TV, CamTwist, and Camtasia. It records video in 192×144, 480×360, and 640х480. Despite the lack of the HD or the full HD resolutions, the image quality is excellent, and the app copes well even with low light and fast-moving objects. The latest version supports iOS 5.1 or later and works with both Windows and Mac OS X.

EpocCam

Another reliable solution is called EpocCam. Compared to WebCamera, it offers a free version with limited functionality and a paid version, called EpocCAM HD, which unlocks all features, including the ability to use the flashlight in dark environments, tap to focus and autofocus modes, and, what’s probably most important, audio support.

EpocCam supports both Windows and Mac OS X but requires iOS 8.0 or higher, compared to just iOS 5.1 in the case of WebCamera. Aside from this, the two apps work almost identically, making EpocCam a perfect baby monitor, spy cam, and security camera, or as a handy way how to call someone on Skype from a PC with no webcam.
