Apple’s Messaging Application

Messages app is Apple’s very own software tool developed for instant messaging (IM) functions for iOS, OS X, and watchOS devices. The Messages app comes in two different versions, the desktop and mobile version. The desktop version of Messages replaced iChat but inherits most of iChat’s features. It also offers support for Apple’s built-in instant messaging (IM) service for iOS, the iMessage. The mobile version of Messages is specifically designed to support SMS and MMS on iOS devices including iPhones and iPads, replacing the older version of text messaging called Text app.

Using iMessage on your iPhone 6s

The iMessage dwells inside the Messages app on your iPhone 6s. It works alongside and often replaces carrier SMS and MMS on the iPhone. And as mentioned earlier, the iMessage is embedded into the built-in messaging app on iPad and iPod touch. You can send unlimited iMessages without having to worry of any charges for iMessage beyond data either through cellular or Wi-Fi.

How to use iMessage on your iPhone 6s

With iMessage you can send messages, photos, videos, locations, and contacts, back and forth with anyone using iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or later versions of Mac computers. You can also text and send pictures and videos through MMS to other smartphones over cellular networks.

In order to use iMessage, you have to set your iPhone 6s up for iMessaging beforehand. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Home screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Messages.
  4. Toggle the switch next to iMessage to turn the feature on or off. This time, toggle it ON.

Your iMessage is now set up and ready for use on your device.

If you encounter any error while attempting to enable iMessage on your iPhone, take note of the error prompt or message. Error prompts are especially important in troubleshooting issues associated with iMessaging.

How to send an iMessage on your iPhone 6s

After setting up your iPhone for iMessaging, you may start sending an iMessage right away. Follow these steps:

  1. Tap Messages from the Home screen. Doing so will open the Messaging application.
  2. From the Messages screen, tap the New Message icon to start composing your message.
  • The New Message icon is located on the upper-right corner of the screen.
  1. Enter the phone number or email address of your recipient. You can also tap the Plus (+) icon and select any from your saved contacts.
  2. Type in your message.
  • To attach a photo or video file, tap the Camera
  • To send an audio file, tap the Microphone
  1. Once you’re message is finished, tap Send.

Group Messaging with iMessage

You can enter multiple recipients if you want to send messages to a group simultaneously using the Messages app on your iPhone.

Here’s how it works:

  • Open the Messages
  • Tap the New Message or Compose icon to begin a new conversation.
  • Enter the recipients’ names or tap the Plus (+) icon to select recipients from your contacts.
  • Start composing your message, and then send it when done.

More iMessaging Tips with your iPhone 6s:

  • If you are trying to send MMS to a group of recipients but appear as individual texts, you may need to enable Group Messages on your iPhone first. To do so, navigate to Settings-> Messages.
  • To add a person to a group message, tap Details, tap Add Contact, and then select a contact you want to add to the conversation.
  • To remove a person from a group message with at least four people, tap Details, and then swipe your finger from right to left on the name of the person you want to remove. Finally, tap Delete to confirm removal of the selected name from the group message.
  • To leave a conversation, tap Details and the tap the option to Leave this Conversation. If this option is not available, update to the latest iOS version available for your device.

Anyone in the group that is not using iMessage or iOS device may not be able to leave the conversation though.

What is the difference between SMS/MMS and iMessage?

SMS/MMS allows you to send text messages and photos to other cellphones or devices. On the other hand, iMessage allows you to send text messages, photos, and videos to other iOS devices or Mac computers over Wi-Fi.

Hint:

  • An indicator of which type of message you’re sending is the color of the Send button and text bubble. If you’re sending iMessage, the Send button and text bubbles turn blue. If you’re sending SMS/MMS, the Send button and text bubbles turn green.

More Handy Tips when using iMessage on your iPhone 6s:

  • If your recipient did not receive the message you’ve sent, a text exclamation mark is displayed next to the message. To send the message again, simply tap the exclamation mark.
  • To forward your message, tap and hold the message bubble, and then tap More. Tap to select/highlight the message you want to forward then tap the Forward icon, and select the recipient of your forwarded message.
  • To delete a message, tap and hold the message bubble, then tap More. To delete all messages at once, tap Delete All. Otherwise, tap to select the messages you want to delete, and then tap the Trash can icon.

Note: Deleted messages can be recovered only by restoring from a backup.

If you want to delete the entire conversation, follow these steps:

  • Open the list of conversations.
  • Swipe from right to left on the conversation you want to remove.
  • Tap Delete to confirm deletion of the selected conversation.

How to Locate iMessage Archive on your iPhone 6s

Your iPhone’s stock messaging application has a number of options you can configure according to your preferences. One of these is the iMessage Archive. As the name implies, the Archive contains all your previous messages from conversations you have closed or saved. Images and videos from those conversations are placed inside Attachments.

The following steps will help you set the Messages app to let you locate your iMessage archive with your device:

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Once you’re in the Messages application, navigate to Messages.
  3. Tap Preferences.
  4. Mark the checkbox next to Save history when conversations are closed.
  5. Now head on to the Finder and open the Go menu.
  6. Select the Go to Folder option.
  7. Type in ~/Library/Messages in the search box.
  8. Tap the Go button to continue.

You should then see the Archive and Attachments folders along with a file database named “chat.db.” This database contains all the information from your active message history.

Archived conversations are labeled by date closed and each files give you the name of the participant along with the date and time the conversation took place. If you open any of these archived messages, the conversation pop up in Messages. You can copy and paste sentences from previous conversations in the Archive but you cannot edit, search, or export these conversations to another file format.

With the iOS 9, users of iOS devices including the iPhone 6s can now send any kind of text or multimedia messages and send them to anyone even those who are not using iPhones. You can also use any available device when responding to your friends’ texts. All these are made possible with iMessage on your iPhone’s stock messaging application.
