What to Do When Your iPhone XS Won’t Turn On

If your iPhone XS has suddenly shut down and is stuck on a black screen, it can be alarming. This issue is often caused by software glitches or, in some cases, hardware problems. Before heading to a service center, try these troubleshooting steps to rule out system errors and get your phone up and running again.

1. Charge Your iPhone XS

The first thing to check is whether your phone has run out of battery. Plug it into a charger and let it charge for at least 30 minutes. If it’s charging properly, it should have enough power to turn on.

2. Force Restart Your iPhone XS

A force restart can fix minor system glitches by refreshing the phone’s operating system. Here’s how to perform a force restart:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

This will clear out any errant apps or processes that might have caused the phone to freeze.

3. Check Battery Usage for Apps

A rapid battery drain could also be causing your phone to shut down. To see if any apps are using excessive power:

  1. Go to Settings > Battery.
  2. Check the Battery Usage section for the Last 24 Hours or Last 10 Days.
  3. If you notice any apps using a disproportionate amount of battery, try closing or managing that app.

4. Update iOS and Apps

Sometimes, outdated software can cause power issues. Ensure your iPhone XS is up-to-date with the latest iOS version and app updates.

To update iOS:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. If an update is available, tap Download and Install.

To update apps:

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap the Updates tab to see any pending app updates.
  3. Tap Update All to update all apps simultaneously.

5. Reset and Restore Factory Defaults

If the problem persists, it may be due to a system error. A factory reset can help, but it will erase all your data, so make sure to back up your iPhone first.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Reset.
  2. Select Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Confirm the reset by entering your device passcode.

You can also restore the phone via iTunes on a computer by following the prompts to reset and restore the device to factory settings.

6. Use Recovery Mode or DFU Mode

If a factory reset doesn’t work, you can attempt a Recovery Mode or DFU Mode restore. These are advanced methods used to fix serious system issues. Both require using iTunes or Finder on a computer.

7. Seek Professional Help

If none of these solutions work, the issue may be related to hardware damage. Take your iPhone XS to an Apple Store or an authorized service center for a diagnostic. If your phone is still under warranty, Apple may offer a repair or replacement.
