Problem 1: iPhone 6S Plus stuck in boot loop, won’t load past Apple logo screen
Hello. I have and iPhone 6s Plus. It has been working fine for the past 2 years I’ve had it. Today, my apps weren’t loading properly like usual (connected and unconnected to wifi). Usually I just turn my phone off and back on again but it wouldn’t turn back on. It just sits at the Apple logo for 23 seconds (I timed it multiple times) then turns back off. I am unable to do the home and sleep button at the same time because a couple months ago an incident happened where the home button fell out after my screen cracking. Please help in whatever way you can. Thank you. (Also for carrier you have spring instead of Sprint). — Richard
Solution: Hi Richard. First off, we want to make it clear that our blog’s goal is to provide software solutions. Any issue that springs from a hardware malfunction will be referred to Apple or to a third party service center.
Secondly, the nature of your problem may be hardware-related. To confirm that, you must do the steps below.
Try a soft reset
Sometimes, the main reason why a phone fails to boot up normally is due to some unknown glitch in the operating system. This glitch can sometimes make the phone unresponsive or remained stuck in perpetual boot loop. To see if it can be fixed, you must simulate a “battery pull”, also known as soft reset. Here’s how:
- Press and hold the phone’s Power button.
- With the power button still held down, press and hold the lower volume button on the other side of the handset.
- Continue to hold both buttons while the display remains blank, until it comes back on with the Apple logo showing. If the iPhone’s screen remains black, continue to the next step.
Do a Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) update
This procedure requires a PC or Mac. You also needs to ensure that you install the latest iTunes to the computer. Once everything is ready, do the following:
- Turn off your iPhone 7. If you can’t turn it off because the screen is not working, wait until the battery is fully drained until the phone turns off by itself.
- If you waited for the battery to drain, make sure to charge the phone for at least 30 more minutes.
- In your computer, make sure that iTunes is running.
- Once your phone is turned off, connect it to your computer via a lightning cable.
- Press and hold down the Power button on the handset for three seconds.
- While still holding down the Power button, press and hold the lower Volume button for about 10 seconds. Make sure that you time it properly since holding the power button too long may simply restart the device.
- After about 10 seconds, release the Power button. Make sure not to release the Volume down button together with the Power button. Wait for about 5 more seconds after releasing the power button before you release the Volume Down button.
- If you performed the process correctly, your computer should display “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.” message.
- You can now start the Restore process by clicking on Restore iPhone button.
Remember, if the screen remains dark or unresponsive during and after the entire DFU update process, you must send the phone to an Apple service center.
If your iPhone remains stuck in boot loop, or if you won’t be able to perform any of two procedures, that’s the time that you consider sending the phone in. As mentioned, we don’t provide hardware support. Let a professional handle the issue so proper care can be done.
Problem 2: iPhone 6 won’t turn on, screen stays black
My iPhone kept freezing and turning off randomly multiple times a day. Every time this would happen I would press the lock button and the home button to reboot the iphone and usually after a time or two it would turn back on and start working until the same problem would happen. Then I would repeat the same process. I’ve been doing this for over a month, and now the iphone won’t even turn back on after it freezes like it usually does when I reboot it by holding the lock and home buttons down. — Ryan Magnuson
Solution: Hi Ryan. it’s hard to draw conclusions based on how you describe the problem so you’ll have to do some troubleshooting to determine if the problem is being caused by a software glitch, or if there’s a need to service the device due to hardware fault.
Verify if accessories are working
In some cases similar to yours, the cause of the problem can be bad accessories. This means that the phone is possibly failing to charge because the charger or charging cable is defective. The accessories that you should check include the following:
- USB cable/charging cable
- External case (if equipped)
- Power outlet
If you have a different set of charging cable and adapter from another iPhone, try that to see if the current one is defective.
Poorly built external cases can sometimes press the Power/Lock button unnecessarily so be sure to remove any if your phone is sporting one.
And finally, don’t forget to check the lowly power outlet. If you usually charge in your favorite outlet, consider changing to a different one in a different location. The same is true if you’re using a power strip or similar.
Check if phone is charging correctly
Any smartphone usually warms up during charging. If the phone’s screen remains black but the phone appears to charge and becomes warm to touch, that can be sign that the problem is isolated to the screen only. This means that the phone is not totally dead and you may be able to turn it on, though the screen won’t work at all. In this case, try to turn the phone back on by pressing the Power button like you usually do to turn the device on, wait for a few moments, then call your number. If the phone rings but the screen stays black, that’s a confirmation that you have a bad screen issue.
Troubleshoot the screen
An iPhone’s screen either works or not. If the phone shows indications that it’s not totally dead, something must be wrong with the screen. If you dropped the phone before or got it wet, don’t waste your time looking for a software solution. There’s no software tweak that you can do to fix a physically broken screen. In that case, you’ll have to send the phone in so the screen can be replaced.
These are the quick tips that you can do to try and troubleshoot a possible screen issue:
- Make sure that your screen isn’t cracked, chipped, or damaged.
- If you have a case or screen protector, take it off.
- If you’re wearing gloves, take them off.
- If you’ve put any stickers over the screen or sensors, peel them off.
- Make sure that your screen is clean.
If nothing changes after doing all the steps above, contact Apple so they can replace the screen for you.
Problem 3: iPhone 6 not charging, screen not working properly
This is Caleb from Ghana in West Africa. My phone doesn’t charge at all but the lighting shows that it is charging and also the screen frequently becomes unresponsive and i can’t use it, which i have to wait for 4 to 5mins until it becomes responsive and goes back after few minutes.
