Today’s problem: iPhone 7 Plus won’t receive emails when on cellular data

iPhone 7 Plus stopped receiving emails on cellular connection. This started 2 weeks ago when I travelled to a remote area and phone had No Service or only 3G. After that time, it refuses to receive  emails over a cellular connection. iOS is 11.3 (latest) Everything works correctly over WiFi connection. Send & Receive emails are both OK. Over cellular connection (WiFi switched OFF in Settings) or in a non-WiFi area, phone does not receive emails. But it can send emails  over cellular. All Apps (Safari, etc) work correctly over cellular. Text messaging works correctly over cellular. Checked iPhone Settings: >Cellular: Mail is ON. Accounts & Passwords: Mail is ON. All account user names & passwords are correct. Incoming & Outgoing Mail Server names are correct, and checked against ISP-specified settings. I have 2 email accounts, both configured as IMAP. I added a test email account, configured as POP3.  It also did not work over cellular, but did work over WiFi. iPhone Mail App has error message when it tries to query mail server over cellular: “Multiple Account Errors. The following accounts have errors: [account name 1] and [account name 2]. Please select individual accounts to see more information”. When I do this, there is no more info. I check and re-check all account settings and they are correct. iPhone has been rebooted (power-cycled) multiple times.  No change. WiFi router has been rebooted. No change. Cable modem has been rebooted. No change. My wife’s identical iPhone 7 PLUS, also iOS 11.3, behaves the same way. I have spent many hours trying to fix this without success. No help from on-line web searches. I’m hoping you can shed some light on this. Many thanks! — David Kennison

Solution: Hi David. We don’t have the complete history of your device so there’s no way we can pinpoint the exact cause. For this issue, there are a number of possible reasons that we can look into so let’s discuss each of them. We’ll also give you the solutions for each. We assume you’ve already looked into the possibility that you may no longer have the correct credentials (username and password) ahead of time but if you haven’t, be sure to do so. To do that, try to log in to your email using a web browser.

Verify Mail app is permitted to use cellular connection

Checking if Mail app is allowed to work when the device is on mobile data should the priority task here. A lot of times, users may inadvertently turn off mobile data access for Mail app. If you haven’t checked this one yet, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Turn on mobile data connection.
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Tap Cellular.
  4. Under CELLULAR DATA section, look for your email app (Mail) and make sure that it’s permitted to use mobile data. If this option is turned off for Mail app, you won’t be able to send and receive email when on cellular data at all.

Reset  network settings

If your Mail app is permitted to use mobile data all along, the next good thing to do is to ensure that you reset your device’s network settings. Doing so will force the phone to return all network configurations for both mobile data and wifi back to their defaults.

To reset network settings on your iPhone 7 Plus:

  1. Tap Settings to open the app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Reset Network Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the device password.
  6. Confirm action.

Delete and re-add email account

Another good thing to do in this case is to delete and re-add your email account. Some email bugs are fixed this way so be sure not to skip it.

Reset all settings

You can also reset your settings to cover the possibility that an important app or service may be disabled for some reason. When you reset all settings on your iPhone, all customized settings are restored to default values. Personal data including sound settings, display settings, network settings, and other custom settings won’t be affected though. Follow these steps to reset all settings on your new iPhone:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset All Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device.
  6. Tap the option to Reset All Settings to confirm action.

Factory reset

Finally, if nothing works, don’t hesitate to do a factory reset. Before you do it though, be sure back your files up to either in iTunes or iCloud. Once you’ve done that, follow the steps below to factory reset your iPhone 7 Plus.

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device to continue.
  6. Tap the option to confirm action.
