If the date or time on your iPhone 14 is off—either a little ahead or behind—you can fix it quickly in the settings. This guide walks you through how to manually or automatically adjust the date and time, plus what to do if the settings won’t stick or are greyed out.
Enable Automatic Date and Time
The easiest way to keep your iPhone’s date and time accurate is to let it update automatically based on your location.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Date & Time.
- Toggle on Set Automatically.
Your iPhone will now sync its time with Apple’s servers based on your time zone.
Note: If this setting is greyed out, skip down to the troubleshooting section below.
Set Date and Time Manually
If you prefer to control the time yourself (or if automatic settings aren’t working), you can turn off automatic updates and set the time manually.
- Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn off Set Automatically.
- Tap the date or time and adjust it using the scroll wheels.
- Exit the menu to save.
Fix “Set Automatically” Greyed Out
Sometimes the “Set Automatically” option is greyed out. This usually happens due to restrictions or system settings.
Here’s how to fix it:
1. Turn Off Screen Time Restrictions
- Go to Settings > Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If enabled, turn off Set Date & Time restrictions.
2. Check Location Services
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Scroll down and tap System Services.
- Make sure Setting Time Zone is turned on.
Restart Your iPhone
If your date and time are still incorrect, a simple restart can often fix temporary glitches.
- Press and hold the Side button + Volume Up until the power slider appears.
- Drag the slider to turn off.
- Wait a few seconds, then press the Side button again to turn it back on.
Update iOS
Software bugs can mess with time settings. Make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
- Restart your iPhone after updating.
Reset All Settings (Last Resort)
If nothing else works, try resetting all settings. This won’t delete your data but will reset Wi-Fi passwords and other preferences.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
