Enhance App Security: A Guide to Enabling Touch ID on iPhone
Touch ID is one of Apple’s most convenient tools for keeping your apps, purchases, and device secure — all with just your fingerprint. If you want a faster and more reliable way to unlock apps, secure sensitive data, and make purchases, enabling Touch ID is a smart move. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.
What Is Touch ID?
Touch ID is Apple’s fingerprint-based biometric authentication system. It allows you to:
- Unlock your iPhone or iPad
- Authorize purchases from the App Store, iTunes Store, and more
- Log into apps that support biometric authentication (like banking apps)
- Secure settings and passwords without typing your passcode every time
Touch ID is available on devices from the iPhone 5s through iPhone 8 Plus, and select iPads with a Home button. Devices like the iPhone X and later use Face ID instead.
How to Set Up Touch ID on iPhone
Before you can use Touch ID, you’ll need to register your fingerprint:
- Open the Settings app
- Tap Touch ID & Passcode
- Enter your current passcode when prompted
- Tap Add a Fingerprint
- Place your finger on the Home button, lift, and repeat until the on-screen progress completes
- Next, adjust your grip and scan the edges of your fingerprint
- Tap Continue when finished
💡 You can register up to five fingerprints — perfect for multiple fingers or trusted users.
How to Enable Touch ID for Specific Functions
Once a fingerprint is added, choose where to use it:
- Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode
- Enable options for:
- iPhone Unlock
- Apple Pay (iPhone 6 and later)
- iTunes & App Store
How to Enable Touch ID for Individual Apps
Not all apps support Touch ID, but for those that do (like PayPal, banking apps, password managers, etc.):
- Open the app
- Go to the app’s Settings or Security section
- Look for options like Enable Touch ID or Use Fingerprint to Unlock
- Follow the app’s prompts to confirm your passcode and enable fingerprint login
Some apps may require you to enable a passcode first before Touch ID becomes available.
How to Use Touch ID for App Store & iTunes Purchases
- Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode
- Toggle ON iTunes & App Store
- Make sure you’re signed in to your Apple ID (under Settings > [your name] > iTunes & App Store)
- The next time you buy an app, music, or book, you’ll see the Touch ID prompt
- Lightly place your finger on the Home button to confirm the purchase
Touch ID Auto-Disables in These Cases:
For your security, Touch ID automatically deactivates and requires a passcode in these situations:
- Your iPhone hasn’t been unlocked for 48 hours
- The device was just restarted
- After 5 failed Touch ID attempts
- A remote lock has been triggered via Find My iPhone
- If the passcode hasn’t been used in the last 6 days, and Touch ID hasn’t been used in the last 8 hours
When that happens, you’ll need to re-enter your passcode to re-enable Touch ID.
Can’t Find Touch ID?
If your iPhone model doesn’t support Touch ID (like iPhone X and newer), you’ll need to use Face ID instead. You’ll find setup under Settings > Face ID & Passcode on those devices.
