What to Do If Your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus Is Bent

If your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus is showing signs of bending—especially near the volume buttons—you’re not alone. This issue, popularly known as “Bendgate,” affected quite a few users when these models launched. Here’s how to handle it and what your options are for repair or replacement.

1. Check If You’re Still Under Warranty

First things first—see if your device is still covered by Apple’s 1-year limited warranty or AppleCare+ (if you bought it). Head to Apple’s Check Coverage page and enter your iPhone’s serial number (you can find it under Settings > General > About).

If it’s within the warranty period and hasn’t been tampered with or damaged due to misuse, Apple might cover a replacement.

2. Visit an Apple Store for a Physical Assessment

The bending issue is hardware-related, so you’ll need a technician to physically inspect your iPhone. Apple stores use a “Visual Mechanical Inspection” to determine if the bend qualifies for a replacement.

To get started:

  • Make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store.
  • Bring your proof of purchase, and your iPhone in its current condition.

If they find that the bend happened under normal use, they may offer a free replacement.

3. Use Apple Chat Support (Recommended)

If you can’t visit a store right away, start with Apple Support Chat—it’s often faster and easier than calling.

Before you chat:

  • Grab your serial number and IMEI (also under Settings > General > About).
  • Visit the Apple Support site and select the issue to start chatting.

They may be able to guide you through your next steps or set up a mail-in repair if you qualify.

4. Call Apple Support Directly

Prefer speaking to someone? You can call Apple Support and explain your situation. Just make sure you’re calling the right number for your country—here’s the list of Apple Support phone numbers.

Have your serial number ready before you call.

5. Understand Out-of-Warranty Costs

If your iPhone is out of warranty or Apple considers the bend “accidental damage,” you might need to pay for a replacement.

Here’s what to expect for out-of-warranty repairs:

  • iPhone 6: ~$299
  • iPhone 6 Plus: ~$329

Check Apple’s official repair pricing page for updated info.

6. Back Up Your iPhone Before Sending It In

If you’re sending your phone in for service or heading to an Apple Store, back everything up first.

You can use:

  • iCloud: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then tap Back Up Now
  • iTunes/Finder: Plug your iPhone into your computer and create a backup manually

That way, once you get a replacement or repaired device, you can restore all your data easily.
