Can’t Delete Apps on iPhone? Here’s How to Fix It

Trying to delete an app on your iPhone but nothing happens—or the “X” just won’t show up? It’s a common issue that can usually be fixed with a few quick steps. Whether it’s due to restrictions, glitches, or your phone being managed by an organization, here’s how to regain control and remove those unwanted apps.

1. Wait for App Downloads to Finish

You can’t delete an app that’s still downloading or installing.

  • If you see the app grayed out with a spinning circle or “Waiting,” let it finish downloading first.
  • Or tap the app to pause and resume the download—it might kick it into completing.

2. Force Quit the App Store

If the App Store is acting up, it can block app management functions.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to open the app switcher.
  • Swipe up on the App Store to close it.
  • Relaunch the App Store and try again.

3. Restart Your iPhone

A quick reboot can fix most minor bugs.

  • For iPhones with Face ID:
Press and hold the Side button + Volume Up/Down until the power slider appears.
Slide to power off, then press the Side button again to turn it back on.

4. Turn Off Restrictions

You may have Screen Time settings preventing app deletion.

  • Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  • Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  • Set Deleting Apps to Allow.

If this is grayed out or not changeable, your iPhone might be managed by an organization or school.

5. Use the App Library to Delete

If you can’t delete an app from the home screen:

  • Swipe all the way left to open the App Library.
  • Find the app, long-press it, then tap Delete App.

Sometimes this bypasses glitches on the main home screen.

6. Delete via the App Store

Another trick is deleting apps from your purchase history:

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon > Purchased.
  3. Swipe left on the app you want to delete and tap Delete.

Note: This removes it from your list—not your phone. Only use this if you’ve already removed the app but still see it listed.

7. Reset All Settings

If weird bugs persist, reset system settings without deleting your data.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  • Enter your passcode to confirm.

This will reset things like Wi-Fi passwords and layout settings, but it won’t erase your data or apps.

8. Update Your iPhone

Outdated iOS can cause bugs like this.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Install any available updates.

9. Check for Management Profiles

If your iPhone is issued by work or school, it may have restrictions.

  • Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
  • If you see a profile, it might block app deletion.
  • Contact your IT admin to remove or adjust it.
