Why is iPhone X not charging or charging very slow

Many people have thought about a phone that doesn’t charge is most likely due to a bad battery or a faulty charger if it’s able to charge but very slow.

However, this is not the always the case. It turns out that most cases of charging issues in smartphones, including Apple’s flagship iPhones have been tied to a software malfunction. As explicated by a former Apple technician, every iPhone device is made up of many different programs responsible to carry out certain task. It’s a similar concept with a computer system.

The device itself represents one whole system that is made up of many different programs (sub-system). There is a specific program for texting (Messages app), calling (Phone app), Internet browsing (browser apps), and so on. The same thing goes for other device functions like re-charging (charging system).

The only difference is that the rest of the apps are visible and accessible by end-users while the charging system is not. In short, this program does its job without you even knowing. If this program gets corrupted or damaged by certain bugs or malware, that’s when you begin to encounter certain problems or errors while charging your iPhone. In this case, the problem is not the battery or any other hardware components but it’s the charging system that is crashing.

You can consider a physical or liquid damage on the iPhone X as probable cause if there were previous instances of your iPhone being dropped or got wet. Usually in this case, the device might have accumulated some sort of damage particularly on relevant components like the battery or charging port.

Other charging problems are due to the use of damaged power sources as well as from using incompatible chargers or faulty charging accessories from unauthorized manufacturers.

How to deal with charging issues on your iPhone X?

Assuming that the problem at hand is not associated with any sort of damage on the iPhone hardware, there is a chance for it to be remedied by some workarounds. As much as possible, try to rule out the possibility or a hardware damage causing your iPhone to not charge properly or won’t charge at all.

If you suspect that a faulty hardware is to blame, then you can save time and effort by taking your iPhone X to an Apple Genius bar neary or contact Apple Support for recommendations and if possible, avail for warranty instead. Otherwise, you may take your chances and troubleshoot the problem with these helpful workarounds and charging tips.

Check your charging accessories

To make sure that everything is working good with your charging equipment in use, take a little time to scrutinize your charging cable, adapter, or power source. To check if your charging cable is working, you can try to charge your other iOS device (if available) then see if it’s working. Or if you have a spare OEM charger for your iPhone, try to use that instead of the one you’re currently using.

Doing so will help you isolate whether or not the problem is on the charging cable. Do the same with the power source. Try to use a different wall outlet to connect your charger to. Or if you have a laptop computer (Windows or Mac), try to connect your iPhone X to the USB port of your computer.

Just make sure the computer is turned on, not idle, and has enough power to supply your iPhone. If you are using a wireless charger, try to rule out the possibility of a faulty or incompatible wireless charging equipment in use.

Force your iPhone X to restart

Some people said that their iPhone won’t charge because when they connect it to the charger it still shows a black screen and seems to get stuck in there. In this case, we cannot really say that the problem you are dealing with is on charging. It is possible that your iPhone is just stuck on black screen and couldn’t get to show the charging indicator even when you attempted to charge it because the system has crashed and caused the device to become unresponsive.

So even if you did plug it to the charging wall, the charging system won’t be able to carry out its function which is to show the charging status because the entire iOS system has crashed and needs to be reset or restored.

To make sure this isn’t what’s happening to you, try to do a force restart on your iPhone X. Apple has made some changes on the rebooting/restarting process particularly force restart. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  • Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  • Finally, press and hold the Side button (Power button) until you see the Apple logo. You may need to hold the Side button for about 20-30 seconds because it may take longer for the device to reboot especially when it gets stuck on a black screen due to software crashes.

If a force restart is able to revive your iPhone, give it time to recharge. After it charges completely, try to determine which has caused it to get stuck or become unresponsive. Most likely a corrupted content or faulty app can trigger these problems to occur. If it happens after you downloaded or installed a new app on your iPhone, try to remove or uninstall the suspected application to prevent the same problem for re-occurring.

Allow your iPhone X to charge a little longer

Sometimes when the device gets totally drained, it can take longer than usual for the charging screen or charging indicator to load. This means the need for you to keep your iPhone X connected to the charger for a little longer. If after an hour, you still don’t see the charging screen or you see the connect to power screen instead, check your charging equipment including the jack, USB cable, and power adapter in use. Make sure that everything is plugged in firmly and the charging port is free of debris and not damaged. Again, you might want to consider trying a different USB cable or power adapter in this case.iphone x won't charge allow iphone to charge

Or you can also try to connect your iPhone X to a computer and try to access the device system through iTunes. If iTunes is able to recognize your iPhone, then it is possible that it just couldn’t load the system as it normally does. To try to fix it, you can try updating or restoring iOS using iTunes.

Connect your iPhone X to a laptop computer (Mac or Windows)

Again you can use your laptop computer as an alternative charging port for iPhone charging. Just make sure that the laptop is connected to a power source and that the screen is turned on or not idle. Some iPhone users who have dealt with charging issues were able to find remedy with this workaround so you may want to give it a try as well and see what happens.

One explanation behind this trick is that some iPhone models require a different voltage input, other than those printed in their specs. Some devices need higher while other need lower voltage than what’s specified in the device specifications.

Calibrate your iPhone X battery

Calibrating the battery can help optimize the battery system and improve the iPhone’s battery life. But then again, this method is only applicable if you still have a little amount of power left on your device. If the problem you have is on slow charging, then this might be able to help. The calibration process involves draining the battery completely and then use it normally until its battery is emptied again. If you can and you wish to try, here’s how it’s done:

  1. Use your iPhone until it powers off or when the battery is completely drained.
  2. Turn it back on and then let it turn off on its own.
  3. When your iPhone is powered off completely, connect it to a charger and then allow it to charge until the charging indicator or battery icon says it has reached a 100 percent.
  4. Disconnect your phone from the charger then turn it on.
  5. If the battery life does not reach 100 percent, plug it back into the charger and allow it to charge longer until it is completely charged at 100 percent.
  6. Unplug the charger when the battery is full.
  7. Restart your iPhone.
  8. Then start using your phone again as you normally do until it runs out of power and turns off on its on.
  9. Charge it again until the battery gets fully charged.
  10. Turn on your phone.

Your battery is then calibrated. By then you should be able to use your iPhone X as intended and let it charge when necessary.

Other iPhone X charging tips to consider

  • Do not use your iPhone while charging.

Bad charging habit like using the phone while charging is also among the factors that can cause the battery life to depreciate faster. It is likewise prohibited for safety reasons. There have been prior reports regarding instances of smartphones that exploded when using the device and charging at the same time.

  • Use only OEM chargers and charging accessories.

Again for safety reasons and to prevent causing unexpected damage to the battery or device itself due to incompatible power inputs, avoid using non-authorized Apple chargers. If you are charging your iPhone wirelessly, be sure to use a compatible Qi-based charging accessories that can support 7.5 watts power output. With iOS 11.2, new iPhones including the iPhone X are already able to charge at 7.5 watts as what Apple has promised before in line with the people’s demand for faster charging speed.
