iPhone 8 Has No Sound? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone 8 suddenly won’t play any sound—no ringer, no media, no alerts—it’s easy to assume something’s broken. But before you rush to the Apple Store, there are several common (and fixable) reasons your iPhone might go silent. This guide walks you through the most effective troubleshooting steps to get your iPhone’s sound working again.

1. Check the Ring/Silent Switch

First, flip the switch on the left side of your iPhone (above the volume buttons). If you see orange, Silent Mode is on.

  • Flip it toward the screen to turn the ringer back on.
  • You should see a “Ringer” pop-up on the screen when you do this.

2. Clean the Speaker Grills

Dirt and debris can muffle or completely block sound from the speaker.

  • Use a soft-bristled brush or a dry toothbrush to gently clean the speaker holes at the bottom of your phone.
  • Avoid using anything sharp or metallic.

3. Turn Bluetooth Off

If your iPhone is connected to a Bluetooth device, audio may be playing through it instead of the built-in speaker.

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth
  • Toggle Bluetooth off
  • Try playing a sound again

4. Increase the Volume

Just in case it’s set too low:

  • Press the Volume Up button repeatedly
  • Or go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider to the right

5. Reboot Your iPhone (Soft Reset)

A quick reboot can clear up minor software bugs.

  • Press and hold the Power button until “slide to power off” appears
  • Slide to turn it off
  • Wait 30 seconds, then hold the Power button to turn it back on

Or go to Settings > General > Shut Down if you’re running iOS 11 or later.

6. Reset All Settings

If a recent settings change messed things up, this will return all settings to default without deleting your data.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset
  • Tap Reset All Settings
  • Enter your passcode if prompted
  • Let the phone restart, then check the sound again

7. Try a Different App

If the issue only happens with one app (like YouTube), it might be the app—not the phone.

  • Try playing audio from another app like Music, Safari, or Podcasts.
  • If other apps work fine, try reinstalling or updating the problematic app.

8. Update iOS

Software updates often contain bug fixes that affect sound and audio behavior.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update
  • If available, download and install the latest update

9. Restore Your iPhone (Factory Reset)

As a last resort (after backing up your data):

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings
  • Or restore via iTunes by selecting Restore iPhone under your device’s Summary tab

This will erase everything and return your iPhone to its factory condition.

10. Still No Sound? It Could Be Hardware

If none of the above works, your speaker might be physically damaged—especially if your iPhone was dropped or got wet.

Time to:

  • Book a Genius Bar appointment
  • Contact Apple Support
  • Visit an authorized service center
