Why does your iPhone 8 having no sound?
Again first possibility as to why don’t hear any sound coming from your device is because the volume might have been set to the lowest level or your device has been muted. You better check on that first. Another factor to consider is a faulty application. No sound problem can be an isolated issue on an application especially if it only occurs to a certain audio app you are using on your iPhone 8. For example, you are only unable to hear a sound while watching videos via YouTube app. In this case, it can be an isolated issue on the video file you are watching or the YouTube app itself might be glitching. You can try using other video/audio apps on your device and if the other apps work then the problem is only with the YouTube app.
Installing faulty updates on your device or certain app can also trigger the same issue to arise. So if you started to hear no sound coming from your device after installing a new update to an app or iOS itself, then that update must be the trigger. Give your device a reboot first to try to rectify the glitch. Minor software glitches are often remedied by a restart.
It is also possible that your iPhone’s sound is redirected to other audio devices. This is most likely the reason if your iPhone is currently paired with or connected to a Bluetooth-enabled audio device or accessory like a car stereo, headset, or Bluetooth speakers. Make sure to check on that one too.
The worst among the possible causes of no sound problem is hardware damage. It is possible that the iPhone speaker or certain audio components had obtained physical or liquid damage from a previous incident of dropping or exposure to liquid. Unfortunately if the problem you are dealing with is hardware-related, there really nothing much you can do on your end to fix it. Taking a trip to an authorized service center is usually necessary to have your device diagnosed and fixed (if necessary) by an Apple technician.
Recommended workarounds and possible solutions
Note that the subsequent workarounds only works if the no sound problem you have on your iPhone 8 is not inflicted by a damaged hardware component. As much as possible, try to rule hardware damage out from the possible causes and once you’ve done that and the problem continues, that’s when you begin troubleshooting with these subsequent workarounds.
Also don’t forget to test your iPhone after completing each method to find out whether or not the problem has been fixed and that your device is already able to make sound afterwards. If the first method failed to solve the problem, then try the next applicable solutions.
Check the Ringer switch and make sure it is not set to mute
To avoid wasting time from going through a series of troubleshooting procedures, check your iPhone’s ringer switch and make sure that it is not set to silent mode. Do so if you hear no sound from your iPhone speaker for incoming calls or from other audio functions.
The ringer switch is located on the top left edge of your iPhone. Try to flip that switch to turn Silent mode on and then off. If it’s set to silent mode, the sound is off, and the switch is in red position. Just be sure to switch it ring.
In case the switch appears to be stuck, try to remove the case to make sure that the switch is not blocked by anything.

Check and ensure no dirt, dust or debris on the iPhone speaker
Dirt, dust and debris can also hinder your iPhone from producing sound outputs especially if this tends to block or clogged in the speaker. Aside from no sound, distant sound or audio cut-offs are also among the usual symptoms. If necessary, clean the speaker ports.
Reboot your iPhone 8 (soft reset)
If this is the first time that your iPhone speaker is not working properly, it is a possible indication of random software glitch, particularly transpiring on the current audio app in use. To rectify these glitches, all you have to do is reboot or soft reset your iPhone 8.
Not only that a soft reset eliminates random software glitches, it also helps free up some space of your iPhone’s internal memory by deleting cache files.
Here’s how a soft reset is properly done on your iPhone 8:
- Press and hold the Side (Power) button for at least 10 seconds until the red slider appears.
- Drag the slider to Power off the iPhone completely.
- Wait for 30 seconds.
- After 30 seconds, press and hold the Side button again until the Apple logo appears.
In iOS 11, you can already restart the device using the settings menu. If you’d prefer to restart your iPhone 8 through this method, head over to Settings-> General-> Shut Down. Your device then powers down. Wait for about 30 seconds then turn it back on. No data will be affected by this process thus it’s a safe and simple solution to begin with. Check your iPhone speaker after the reboot to see if it’s already working properly.
Adjust volume level and check audio settings
For problems on distant sound, very low sound, or no sound out all, it is possible that the volume is set to the lowest level or the ringer for sound alerts is set to mute. To make sure this is not causing your trouble, check the volume settings and make some adjustments. Try to increase the volume or set to your preferred loudness and see if there are any changes.
- To access and manage audio settings on your iPhone 8, go to Settings-> Sounds-> Ringer and Alerts and then adjust the volume level to a higher level by dragging the slider.
After making necessary adjustments on the volume and audio settings, restart your iPhone then try to see if you can now hear a sound from it. You can try playing some ringtones, perform test calls or text to see if call and text notification alerts sounds are working too.
Verify and ensure Bluetooth is turned off
When Bluetooth is enabled, it is possible that your iPhone 8 is currently paired with and connected to another Bluetooth-enabled audio device like Bluetooth speaker thus you hear no sound coming from your iPhone speaker. In this case, the iPhone speaker is working but not in use at the moment since the sound is redirected to another device. To rule this out from the possible causes, try to disable Bluetooth on your iPhone 8 and then test the speaker if it’s already working as intended.
- To do so, head over to Settings-> Bluetooth and then toggle the switch to turn the feature off.
Reboot your iPhone 8 after disabling Bluetooth to ensure recent changes are properly implemented. Check the speaker afterwards.
Reset all settings on your iPhone 8
Should the speaker problem you are dealing with has something to do with incorrect settings that you couldn’t determine, resetting all settings on your iPhone might be the key to fixing it. However, all your personal settings and customized options will be deleted in the process. Should you wish to take your chances and give it a try, backup your settings and follow these steps:
- Navigate to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select Reset All Settings.
- If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device to proceed.
- Wait until the settings reset process is finished.
Reboot your iPhone 8 one more time and then check and see if the speaker is already working fine.
Update your iPhone 8 to the latest iOS version
If you haven’t installed the latest iOS version for your iPhone 8, then you should consider doing so. Software updates also contain fixes to certain bugs affecting different features and functions in iOS devices including your iPhone’s audio functions. Should the problem you have is triggered by some tough bugs, then the update should be able to rectify it.
- To get started, head over to your iPhone Settings-> General-> About.
A notification will show if an update is available. Before you proceed with the iOS update download and installation, backup your iPhone for safekeeping.
- To proceed with iOS update implementation, select the option to Download and Install then follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.
Perform a Master reset or Factory reset
This should be considered as your last resort when dealing with speaker problems that are associated with software malfunctions. It is a tedious process but often does wonder in fixing software-related issues that could not be remedied by any prior solutions. The only downside is that all your data and information will be erased in the process as your iPhone will be restored to its factory defaults afterwards. Any bug residing within the iPhone’s system structure that couldn’t be rid by other minor processes will likewise be eradicated during the reset. Should you wish to proceed with a factory reset, here’s what you should do next.
- Back up your iPhone data.
- Get a computer ready. You can use either Windows or Mac computer for as long as it runs the latest version of iTunes.
- Connect your iPhone to the computer using the supplied USB connector or cable.
- Open iTunes on the computer.
- Wait until iTunes is able to detect or recognize your iPhone 8.
- Navigate to the Summary panel on iTunes.
- Click the option to Restore iPhone.
- Confirm action by clicking on Restore again.
- Wait until the system restore is complete.
Alternatively, you can do a factory reset through your iPhone Settings menu.
- To do so, head over to Settings->General-> Reset-> Erase All Content and Settings. Tap the option to Erase iPhone. If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device to proceed.
Your iPhone will now reset to factory defaults. Check to see if you can now hear it sound.
Contact Apple Support
If none of these is able to fix the problem and that you are still unable to hear any sound from your iPhone 8, then it must be something more serious or complex. At this point, seeking further assistance from Apple Support is already necessary. Apparently, there’s nothing more you can do on your end as everything has failed to offer a solution. Also consider escalating the problem if it occurs after installing an iOS update so it can be tagged among other post-update issues to be fixed in the following update’s fix patch.
