iPhone 7 Not Ringing or Has No Sound? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone 7 isn’t ringing when someone calls—or you’re getting no sound from notifications, texts, or even music—it can be a major hassle. Whether it’s dead silent or just randomly muted, there are a number of possible reasons behind the issue. The good news? You can usually fix it yourself. Here’s what to check.

1. Restart or Force Restart Your iPhone

Sometimes the no-sound issue is just a random glitch.

Restart:

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake (Power) button until the slide to power off appears.
  • Slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the Power button again until the Apple logo shows up.

Force Restart:

  • Press and hold Power + Volume Down buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.

2. Make Sure Do Not Disturb (DND) is Off

When DND is on, your iPhone won’t ring—even if everything else seems fine.

  • Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb.
  • Make sure both Manual and Scheduled are OFF.

Or: Open Control Center by swiping up from the bottom and make sure the crescent moon icon is not active.

3. Check the Ring/Silent Switch

Flip the physical Ring/Silent switch on the left side of your iPhone. If you see orange, your phone is in silent mode.

  • Flip it toward the screen to turn sound back on.
  • Watch for the on-screen confirmation that ringer is enabled.

4. Turn Up the Ringer Volume

Even if other sounds play fine, your ringtone might be too low or muted.

  • Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
  • Drag the Ringer and Alerts slider all the way to the right.
  • Make sure Change with Buttons is enabled if you want to use volume buttons for this.

Or use Control Center to raise the volume manually.

5. Turn Off Bluetooth

Your iPhone might be sending audio to a Bluetooth speaker or headset you forgot was connected.

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn it OFF.
  • Then test if the sound is now playing through your phone’s speakers.

6. Inspect the Speakers and Ports

Dust or debris in the speaker grill or Lightning port can mess with sound output.

  • Use a soft, dry brush or compressed air to gently clean the speaker, mic, and charging port.
  • Avoid using anything sharp or wet.

7. Try Playing Audio From an App

To rule out ringtone-only issues, try opening Music, YouTube, or any sound-based app. If sound plays there, the problem may be with your ringtone settings, not the speaker.

8. Reset All Settings

If the issue started after tweaking settings and you don’t know what changed:

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

This won’t delete your data, but it will reset Wi-Fi passwords, preferences, and system settings.

9. Test with a Call or Message

Once you’ve done the above, try these quick tests:

  • Call your iPhone from another phone.
  • Send a text message.
  • Play a song or video.

Check if you hear alerts, ringtones, or audio now.

10. Still No Sound? Contact Apple

If nothing works, you may be dealing with:

  • A hardware issue (blown speaker, damaged audio chip)
  • Water damage or a failed connection on the logic board

At this point, it’s best to reach out to Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for a hardware inspection. If your iPhone is under warranty or AppleCare+, you may be eligible for repair or replacement.
