iPhone 6 or 6 Plus Camera Is Blurry or Not Working? Try These Fixes

If your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus camera is acting up—blurry photos, won’t focus, or just flat-out not working—you’re not alone. These models are known for some frustrating camera issues. Whether your camera won’t open, freezes, or takes terrible shots, here’s how to fix it.

iPhone 6 Plus Photos Are Blurry or Look Like Watercolors

If your iPhone 6 Plus takes out-of-focus or grainy pictures, even after tapping to focus, your phone might have a known hardware defect in the rear camera.

What to do:

  1. Go to Apple’s iSight Camera Replacement Program and enter your phone’s serial number to see if your unit is eligible.
  2. If eligible, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for a free rear camera replacement.
  3. This program covers affected phones for up to 3 years from the purchase date, so it may still apply even if your warranty expired.

iPhone 6 Rear Camera Only Focuses on Close Objects

If your rear camera only focuses on objects an inch or two away, and tapping to focus doesn’t help, it could be a lens or image stabilization issue.

Try these steps:

  • Clean the lens with a microfiber cloth. Dust or smudges can interfere with focus.
  • Remove your case (especially if it’s metallic). Some cases mess with the optical image stabilization.
  • Disable HDR or set it to Auto in the Camera app.
  • Use a third-party camera app like Halide or ProCamera to see if it behaves differently.
  • If all else fails, reset your settings:
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.

Camera App Won’t Open or Phone Is Stuck on Apple Logo

If your iPhone is frozen after using the camera (especially after your kid played with it), and it won’t boot normally:

You’ll need to restore it in DFU mode:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together for 10 seconds.
  3. Release the Sleep/Wake button but keep holding the Home button until iTunes or Finder detects a device in recovery.
  4. Select Restore iPhone.

Heads-up: This will wipe your device, so only proceed if you’ve already backed up your data or have no other option.

Front Camera Shows Black Screen or Doesn’t Work at All

If your selfie cam gives you a blank screen or doesn’t show your face during FaceTime:

Try this first:

  • Restart your iPhone.
  • Check for iOS updates under Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If it still doesn’t work, your front camera may have failed. You’ll need to visit an Apple Store or authorized service provider.

Both Front and Rear Cameras Won’t Work (But FaceTime Does)

This sounds like a software or app-specific bug.

Try the following:

  • Check if it works in other apps (like Instagram, VSCO, etc.).
  • Free up storage space. Low storage can block photo saving.
  • Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and clear out unnecessary files.
  • Delete and reinstall any camera-related apps that aren’t working.
  • Reset all settings as a last resort: Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

Rear Camera Works for Video, But Not for Photos

This one’s weird—but not unheard of. If your rear camera can shoot video but refuses to snap pictures:

Here’s what to do:

  • Start by restarting your phone.
  • Make sure you have enough storage space for photos.
  • Try a different camera app to see if photos work there.
  • If not, reset all settings or do a full restore via iTunes/Finder (after backing up your data).
  • Still no luck? This could be a glitchy camera module. Head to Apple for repair.
