iPhone 6s Plus Screen Won’t Rotate? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone 6s Plus screen is stuck in portrait or landscape mode and won’t rotate, you’re not alone. This handy feature can stop working due to a simple setting, a misbehaving app, or even a software glitch. Here’s how to get things spinning again—literally.

1. Check If Rotation Lock Is On

Sometimes the most obvious fix is the right one.

How to disable Rotation Lock:

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the rotation lock icon (it looks like a padlock with a circular arrow).
  3. Make sure it’s turned off—you shouldn’t see the icon at the top of your screen anymore.

2. Force Close the App You’re Using

If screen rotation isn’t working in just one app, it might be the app that’s frozen—not your phone.

To force close an app:

  1. Double-press the Home button to bring up the app switcher.
  2. Swipe left or right to find the app.
  3. Swipe up on the app’s preview to force close it.
  4. Reopen the app and check if rotation works.

Note: Not all apps support screen rotation—even built-in ones like the App Store and some parts of Settings.

3. Turn Off Display Zoom

Display Zoom disables screen rotation on the Home screen.

How to switch to Standard View:

  1. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
  2. Tap View under Display Zoom.
  3. Select Standard, then tap Set in the top-right corner.
  4. Confirm by tapping Use Standard. Your iPhone will restart.

When it turns back on, try rotating your screen again from the Home screen.

4. Force Restart Your iPhone

If a software glitch is causing your iPhone to ignore orientation changes, a quick force reboot might solve it.

How to force restart an iPhone 6s Plus:

  1. Press and hold the Home button and the Power (Sleep/Wake) button at the same time.
  2. Keep holding for 20 seconds, or until you see the Apple logo.
  3. Release the buttons and let your iPhone restart.

5. Power Down, Reboot, and Calibrate the Accelerometer

Sometimes restarting in a specific position helps recalibrate your phone’s motion sensors.

Try this:

  1. Power off your iPhone by holding the Sleep/Wake button and sliding to power off.
  2. Hold your phone upright (portrait mode) while turning it back on.
  3. Wait for the phone to fully boot while keeping it in portrait.
  4. Unlock the phone and then rotate it slowly to landscape while on the Home screen.

If the rotation works now, your accelerometer just needed a little help.

6. Test in an App That Supports Rotation

Some apps don’t rotate at all, so test with ones that do—like Safari, Photos, or the Camera.

If rotation still doesn’t work even in those apps, continue with the next step.

7. Still Stuck? It Might Be Hardware-Related

If screen rotation refuses to work after trying all the above:

  • Check for recent drops or impacts that may have damaged the accelerometer.
  • Visit Apple Support or your carrier to have the phone evaluated.
  • If your iPhone is under warranty or AppleCare+, you may qualify for a repair or replacement.

  1. Thank you! Step 1 took care of it. Wish your page came up higher in search results.

  2. Iphone 6 plus. The compass is frozen in one spot only the little plus behind the compass moves but its not level. The level is offset, I have to hold my phone sideways for it to say 0,0. The screen does not rotate when turned sideways and the battery drains pretty fast, in idle.
