Aside from onscreen driving directions, Apple's stock Maps app is also capable of providing spoken directions to guide you towards your destination. That said, you can make your iPhone tell you about more enhanced details for bike lanes, buildings, crosswalks and other relevant information when driving. This will help you find the right lane to pass without having to look at the driving details written in the Maps app.
Depicted below is a step by step walkthrough on how to turn on the spoken directions in the iPhone 14 Maps app. Feel free to refer to this guide if needed.
When ready, tap the Settings icon from the Home screen or App library to launch the iOS settings app menu.
The settings app icon/shortcut is represented by a gear icon found on either screen (Home or App Library).
In the Settings app menu, scroll to find and then tap Maps.
Doing so will launch the Maps app settings menu on the next window.
While in the Maps app menu, navigate to the Directions section and then tap Spoken Directions.
On the succeeding window, you will see three toggles including Directions Pause Spoken Audio, Directions Wake Device and Directions on Radio.
To use any of these features, simply tap to enable the switch next to the option/feature that you’d like to use for when getting directions in Maps while driving or in transit.
All changes will reflect and be applied to the iOS 16 Maps spoken directions function.

Different Spoken Direction Options
In the updated (iOS 16) Maps app, there are three main options that you can enable and use with spoken directions including direction pause spoken audio, directions wake device and directions on radio. You may opt to enable any of these options according to your needs and preferences.
And here’s what happens when you turn on each of these spoken direction options on your iPhone 14.
Turning on Directions Pause Spoken Audio prompts the device to pause content such as podcasts and audiobooks during spoken directions..
Turning on Directions Wake Device will prompt the device to wake the display when using spoken directions while the device is locked, when driving or cycling.
Turning on Directions on Radio will let you hear spoken directions on cars that support the feature when you’re listening to the radio.
And that’s how to configure spoken directions in Maps on the new Apple iPhone 14 smartphone.
