YouTube Videos Not Playing on iPhone XR? Here’s How to Fix It
Trying to watch YouTube but videos won’t load or play on your iPhone XR? Whether it’s constant buffering, a frozen screen, or videos refusing to play altogether, this guide walks you through the fixes that work—so you can get back to streaming smoothly.
1. Restart Your iPhone
A simple reboot clears minor bugs and background glitches.
- Hold the Side button + Volume Up/Down, then slide to power off.
- Wait 30 seconds, then power your phone back on.
Once it restarts, open YouTube and try playing a video again.
2. Force Close and Reopen the YouTube App
The app itself may be stuck or crashed:
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
- Find the YouTube app and swipe up on it to force close.
- Reopen YouTube and try again.
3. Check Your Internet Connection
No or poor internet = no YouTube playback.
- Open Safari and load a website to test.
- If pages don’t load or are slow, restart your Wi-Fi router.
- You can also toggle Wi-Fi off/on via Settings > Wi-Fi or try switching to cellular data.
4. Update the YouTube App
Outdated apps may not play videos properly, especially after an iOS update.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon at the top right.
- Scroll to YouTube, tap Update if available.
5. Update iOS (If You Haven’t Already)
A new iOS version can fix compatibility issues with YouTube.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install if a new update is available.
6. Reinstall the YouTube App
If the app is corrupted, uninstalling and reinstalling can fix it:
- Tap and hold the YouTube icon until it jiggles.
- Tap the X and confirm deletion.
- Go to the App Store, search YouTube, then reinstall it.
7. Reset Network Settings
Glitches in your network config can affect streaming apps:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward and test YouTube again.
8. Try Airplane Mode Trick
This quickly refreshes all wireless radios:
- Go to Settings > Airplane Mode and toggle it ON.
- Wait 10–15 seconds, then turn it OFF.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and relaunch YouTube.
9. Reset All Settings
If something deeper in your system settings is interfering:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Choose Reset All Settings.
This won’t delete your data but will reset preferences, so Wi-Fi and display settings may need to be reconfigured.
Still Not Working?
- Visit YouTube.com in Safari to check if the issue is limited to the app.
- Try another YouTube video—some uploads may have playback restrictions or region blocks.
- If everything else fails, contact YouTube support or check Google’s server status page for reported outages.
