iPhone XR Not Charging or Charging Slowly? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone XR suddenly stops charging, charges slowly, or only charges intermittently, you’re not alone. This is a common issue even on newer iPhones, and the cause could be anything from a faulty cable to a minor software glitch.

Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix iPhone XR charging problems.

First: Check the Basics

Before diving into settings, make sure of the following:

  • You’re using the original Apple charger or a certified third-party charger.
  • The charging cable and power adapter are not damaged.
  • The charging port is clean and free of debris.
  • Try another wall outlet, or switch between a wall outlet and USB port.
  • If you’re using a case, remove it — it might block proper contact.

If you’ve done all that and it still won’t charge, move on to the steps below.

Fix: iPhone XR Not Charging At All

🔋 1. Force Restart While Plugged In

Sometimes software freezes during charging and prevents the phone from responding.

  1. Plug in your iPhone XR.
  2. Quickly press and release Volume Up.
  3. Quickly press and release Volume Down.
  4. Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

If the Apple logo shows up, you’re back in business — it was likely a minor software glitch.

🔋 2. Let It Charge for 30–60 Minutes

If your battery was completely drained, your iPhone might need time before showing signs of life. Leave it plugged in (preferably to a wall outlet) and wait.

Still no response after an hour? Try a different cable and adapter.

Fix: iPhone XR Charging Slowly or Keeps Disconnecting

1. Avoid USB Ports

Charging via laptop USB ports or car chargers can be too weak. Use a wall outlet for the best results.

2. Remove Third-Party Accessories

Non-Apple cases or docks can misalign the charging cable. Try charging your iPhone without any case to rule this out.

3. Update iOS

A software update could resolve slow or inconsistent charging caused by bugs.

  • Go to Settings → General → Software Update
  • Download and install any available updates.

4. Reset All Settings

If you changed settings recently and charging got worse:

  • Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

This won’t delete your data — just resets preferences like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.

Optional Fixes

Try Wireless Charging

If the charging port might be damaged, try a wireless charging pad that supports Qi charging. This bypasses the Lightning port entirely.

Check for App Conflicts

If charging slowed after installing a new app:

  • Delete or update the app.
  • Monitor whether charging improves afterward.

Still Not Charging?

If nothing’s worked so far:

  • Try another certified Lightning cable and charger.
  • Take your phone and charger to an Apple Store or service provider.
  • Check warranty or AppleCare+ coverage for replacement.
