iPhone Keeps Restarting Randomly? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone restarts by itself out of nowhere—whether it’s once a day or multiple times an hour—it’s more than just annoying. It could point to a software glitch, battery issue, or even hardware damage. The good news? You can often fix this yourself. Here’s what to do when your iPhone keeps restarting at random.
1. Install the Latest iOS Update
A buggy iOS version is one of the most common reasons for random restarts—especially after a major update.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Download and install any available updates.
Apple regularly patches system bugs with new updates, so this alone might solve the issue.
2. Update All Your Apps
Outdated or poorly coded apps can clash with iOS and cause background crashes.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon (top right).
- Scroll down and tap Update All.
Apps using too much memory or battery are often culprits.
3. Check for Faulty or High-Usage Apps
Sometimes a specific app is behind your iPhone’s instability.
- Go to Settings > Battery and look for any apps with unusually high usage.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data and look for repeated app crash logs.
- Delete any app that appears repeatedly or shows heavy background activity.
4. Free Up Storage Space
Low storage can slow down your iPhone and cause system instability.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Delete unused apps, old photos, large attachments, or videos.
- Aim to keep at least 10% of your total storage free.
5. Check Your Battery Health
A weak battery can lead to sudden shutdowns and reboots.
- Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
- If Maximum Capacity is under 80% or the status says “Service,” your battery might be failing.
- Consider getting a battery replacement through Apple Support.
6. Clean and Inspect the Charging Port
If your phone restarts when charging or using accessories, the charging port may be dirty or damaged.
- Power off your iPhone.
- Use a wooden toothpick or soft brush to remove any lint or debris from the port.
- Try a different Lightning cable and adapter.
7. Avoid Overheating
Heat can force your iPhone to shut down or restart to protect itself.
- Keep your iPhone out of direct sunlight.
- Avoid using it while charging or running high-performance apps for long periods.
8. Do a Force Restart
A force restart can resolve temporary system glitches.
For Face ID models:
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
For iPhones with Home buttons:
- Hold the Home and Power buttons until the Apple logo appears.
9. Restore Your iPhone via iTunes or Finder
If the random restarts continue, it might be time for a clean install of iOS.
- Back up your iPhone to iCloud or your computer.
- Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC.
- Open Finder (macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes (Windows/macOS Mojave or earlier).
- Click Restore iPhone from the Summary panel.
This erases your iPhone and reinstalls the operating system.
10. Contact Apple Support
Still having issues after a restore? There’s a good chance you’re dealing with:
- A failing logic board
- Defective battery or power IC
- Damage from drops or water exposure
Visit an Apple Store or go to Apple Support to schedule a repair.
