iPhone 5S Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone 5S is struggling to connect to Wi-Fi, don’t panic. Whether the device won’t find your network, keeps disconnecting, or simply refuses to connect, these kinds of issues are common — especially on older iPhones like the 5S.

This guide walks you through all the reliable fixes to get your iPhone 5S back online.

1. Make Sure Wi-Fi Is Enabled

Let’s start with the basics.

  • Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  • Make sure Wi-Fi is turned ON.
  • Tap your Wi-Fi network and enter the password if prompted.

If you don’t see any networks, move closer to the router or restart your phone and try again.

2. Check Airplane Mode

If Airplane Mode is turned on, all wireless radios (Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth) are disabled.

  • Go to Settings.
  • If Airplane Mode is ON, turn it OFF.
  • You can also try toggling it ON, wait a few seconds, then turn it OFF again to refresh connections.

3. Restart Your iPhone and Router

A simple reboot often fixes temporary glitches.

To force restart your iPhone 5S:

  1. Hold the Home button and Power button at the same time.
  2. Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.

Also restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in.

4. Test the Router Connection

Try connecting a different device (like a laptop or another phone) to the same Wi-Fi network.

  • If other devices can connect, the issue is likely with your iPhone.
  • If no devices can connect, your router may be the problem.

Make sure MAC filtering is off and the network is not hidden.

5. Try a Different Network

  • Take your iPhone somewhere else — a friend’s house, a café, or a public hotspot.
  • If it connects there, the problem is likely with your original Wi-Fi router, not the iPhone.

6. Reset Network Settings

This is a powerful fix that clears out all saved Wi-Fi passwords, networks, and VPNs — without touching your data.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode and confirm.

Your phone will restart. Afterward, reconnect to your Wi-Fi network manually.

7. Update Your iPhone (If Possible)

If you’re running an outdated version of iOS, try updating to the latest version available for the iPhone 5S (iOS 12.5.7).

To update:

  • Use iTunes on a computer.
  • Connect your phone via USB.
  • Launch iTunes and click Check for Update under your iPhone’s Summary tab.

8. Perform a Factory Reset (Last Resort)

⚠️ This will erase everything on your iPhone — back up your data first.

To factory reset with iTunes:

  1. Power off your iPhone.
  2. Open iTunes and connect your iPhone while holding the Home button.
  3. iTunes will detect the device in Recovery Mode.
  4. Click Restore iPhone > Restore and Update.

Once restored, set your iPhone up as new and test the Wi-Fi connection.

Still Not Working?

If none of these solutions work, the issue may be hardware-related:

  • Damaged Wi-Fi antenna
  • Loose internal components
  • Water or drop damage

Take your iPhone to an Apple Store or authorized repair center for professional inspection.
