How to Fix No Service Error on iPhone 5s
If your iPhone 5s suddenly shows “No Service” and can’t make calls or send texts, you’re not alone. This issue can be caused by anything from a SIM card problem to a software glitch or even network issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and fix the no service error on your iPhone 5s.
1. Check Your Signal and Network Coverage
Start with the basics—make sure you’re in an area with cellular coverage.
- Look around: Are other phones on the same carrier getting a signal?
- Go outside: If you’re indoors or underground, try moving to an open space.
- Call your carrier: There could be a local outage or maintenance work happening in your area.
If other phones have signal but yours doesn’t, proceed with the steps below.
2. Force Restart Your iPhone 5s
A quick force restart can fix software glitches that cause network errors.
Here’s how:
- Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button.
- Keep holding for around 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Once your phone reboots, check if service is restored.
3. Remove and Reinsert the SIM Card
A loose or faulty SIM card can trigger a no service error.
To check your SIM:
- Turn off your iPhone.
- Use a SIM ejector tool (or paperclip) to remove the SIM tray.
- Take out the SIM card and inspect it for damage or dirt.
- Reinsert it and power the phone back on.
Try using a different SIM card to see if the issue is with the card itself.
4. Turn Off Data Roaming (If You’re Home)
If you’ve recently returned from a trip, data roaming might still be on, which can interfere with normal signal behavior.
To turn it off:
- Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Data Roaming and make sure it’s Off.
5. Check Airplane Mode
Airplane Mode disables all wireless connections. Even if it looks off, try toggling it.
To do it:
- Go to Settings.
- Turn Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, then turn it off again.
Wait a few moments for your phone to reconnect to your network.
6. Reset Network Settings
Corrupted or misconfigured network settings can cause connectivity issues.
To reset:
- Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted and confirm.
Your phone will restart and all Wi-Fi and cellular settings will be reset to default.
7. Update iOS and Carrier Settings
Outdated software can cause compatibility issues with carrier networks.
- Connect your iPhone to a computer with iTunes installed.
- If an update is available, install it.
- Also check for carrier settings updates by going to Settings > General > About.
If there’s a carrier update, you’ll get a prompt to install it.
8. Perform a Factory Reset via iTunes (Hard Reset)
If nothing else works, restoring your iPhone to its factory settings might fix deep software issues.
⚠️ Back up your data first. This will erase everything.
Steps:
- Turn off your iPhone.
- Hold the Home button, then connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable (while still holding Home).
- Release the Home button when iTunes says it detected your iPhone in recovery mode.
- Click Restore iPhone > Restore and Update.
Wait for the process to finish and set up your iPhone as new.
