iPhone 5C Won’t Charge? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone 5C refuses to charge, don’t panic — this is a common issue, especially on older iPhones. Whether it’s completely unresponsive or just not charging reliably, there are a few simple things you can try before heading to a repair shop.
Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix the iPhone 5C charging issue.
1. Check Your Charging Cable and Adapter
Damaged or faulty charging gear is the most common cause of charging problems.
- Try using a different USB cable.
- Swap out the wall adapter.
- Use only Apple-certified charging accessories when possible.
Cables wear out, especially where they bend often — so even if it looks fine, try a known-good one to be sure.
2. Try a Different Power Outlet
It might not be your iPhone or charger — the wall outlet could be the problem.
- Plug your charger into a different wall socket.
- Avoid using power strips or extension cords while testing.
If you’re unsure about the outlet, test it with another device like a lamp or phone charger.
3. Inspect and Clean the Charging Port
Dust, lint, or moisture in the port can block the connection.
- Blow gently into the port or use a can of compressed air.
- Inspect with a flashlight for any visible debris.
- If the port looks wet, let it air dry in a cool, dry place for several hours.
Don’t insert anything metal into the port — you could damage the pins.
4. Charge Using a Computer USB Port
If wall charging fails, try a USB port on your computer.
- Connect your iPhone using your cable.
- If it starts charging, the issue may be with the adapter or wall outlet.
Note: Charging from a USB port is slower than using a wall adapter, but it confirms the phone can still charge.
5. Force Restart Your iPhone
A software glitch may cause your iPhone to appear unresponsive or prevent charging.
To force restart:
- Press and hold the Home button and Sleep/Wake (Power) button together.
- Keep holding both until you see the Apple logo.
- Release both buttons.
Now plug your charger in again and check for a response.
6. Perform a Hard Reset (Factory Restore)
If nothing else works, you can reset your iPhone using iTunes.
⚠️ This erases everything on your device — back up first if possible.
To restore using iTunes:
- Make sure the iPhone is powered off.
- Open iTunes on your computer.
- Hold the Home button and connect your iPhone to the computer via USB.
- Keep holding the Home button until iTunes detects the phone in Recovery Mode.
- Click Restore iPhone > Restore and Update.
After iTunes finishes the restore, check if the phone will charge.
Still Not Charging? It Could Be Hardware
If your iPhone 5C still won’t charge after trying all of the above:
- The charging port could be damaged.
- The battery may be degraded or faulty.
- The charging IC chip on the motherboard might be failing.
Take the phone to an Apple Store or authorized service provider for diagnosis and possible repair.
