iPhone 5 Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone 5 suddenly refuses to connect to Wi-Fi, it can be incredibly frustrating — especially if you’re stuck on slow cellular data or no signal at all. Whether your Wi-Fi switch is greyed out, your iPhone just won’t join the network, or it drops connection repeatedly, here’s how to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

1. Make Sure Wi-Fi Is Enabled

It might sound basic, but double-check that Wi-Fi is turned on:

  • Go to Settings > Wi-Fi
  • Make sure the switch is ON
  • Tap your Wi-Fi network name and enter the password if needed

2. Turn Off Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode disables all wireless connections, including Wi-Fi.

  • Go to Settings > Airplane Mode
  • Make sure it’s turned OFF

If it was already off, toggle it ON, wait a few seconds, then turn it OFF again.

3. Check Your Router

The issue might not be your phone at all.

  • Can other devices connect to the same Wi-Fi network?
  • Try restarting your router (unplug for 30 seconds, then plug it back in)
  • Try connecting your iPhone 5 to a different Wi-Fi network to test

If it connects elsewhere, the problem may be with the router — check settings like MAC filtering.

4. Force Restart Your iPhone 5

This refreshes your system and clears minor glitches.

  • Press and hold the Home button and Sleep/Wake (Power) button together
  • Keep holding both for about 10 seconds
  • Release when the Apple logo appears

5. Reset Network Settings

Misconfigured settings can block Wi-Fi access.

  • Go to Settings > General > Reset
  • Tap Reset Network Settings
  • Enter your passcode and confirm

This will erase all saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, and VPN settings — but won’t delete your data.

6. Update iOS (If Available)

Apple occasionally releases updates that fix bugs, including Wi-Fi issues. Since the iPhone 5 is an older model, you’ll need iTunes to check for updates:

  • Connect your iPhone to a computer with iTunes
  • Open iTunes and select your device
  • Click Summary > Check for Update
  • If available, click Download and Update

7. Perform a Hard Reset via iTunes

If nothing else works, a full restore might help.

⚠️ This will erase all data — back up first.

  • Power off your iPhone
  • Hold the Home button and connect it to a computer running iTunes
  • When prompted, click OK to enter recovery mode
  • Click Restore iPhone > Restore and Update

Once done, set up your phone as new and test the Wi-Fi before reinstalling apps.

Still Not Working? It Could Be Hardware

If none of the above worked, there may be an issue with your iPhone’s Wi-Fi antenna or chipset — especially if the Wi-Fi toggle is greyed out. At this point, your best option is to:

  • Visit an Apple Store or authorized repair center
  • Ask for a hardware diagnostic
