iPhone 5 Screen Flickering? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone 5 screen is flickering or flashing unexpectedly, you’re not alone. This issue can be frustrating — whether it’s happening constantly or only during specific tasks. While the iPhone 5 is an older model, you can still take a few troubleshooting steps to try to fix the problem before resorting to hardware repair. Here’s what to do.
1. Force Restart the iPhone 5
Sometimes screen flickering is just the result of a temporary software glitch.
How to force restart:
- Press and hold the Home button
- While holding it, press and hold the Power (Sleep/Wake) button
- Keep both buttons held for 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo
This refreshes the system and clears out minor glitches.
2. Turn Off Auto-Brightness
Auto-Brightness can sometimes conflict with the ambient light sensor and cause screen flickering.
To turn it off:
- Go to Settings > General > Accessibility
- Tap Display Accommodations
- Toggle Auto-Brightness OFF
Use the screen for a while and check if the flickering stops.
3. Test While Charging
Flickering may be due to inconsistent power supply from the battery.
- Plug your iPhone 5 into the original Apple charger
- Use it for a few minutes while connected
If the flickering stops while charging, your battery may be degrading and not supplying stable voltage — consider getting the battery replaced.
4. Perform a Factory Reset
If none of the above work, a factory reset can wipe out any deeper software issues.
⚠️ This will erase all your data. Back up first.
To factory reset with iTunes:
- Power off your iPhone
- Plug it into a computer running iTunes while holding the Home button
- When prompted in iTunes that your iPhone is in recovery mode, click OK
- Click Restore iPhone > Restore and Update
After the reset, monitor the screen behavior before reinstalling any apps.
Still Flickering? It Could Be a Hardware Issue
If your iPhone 5 screen is still flickering after trying all the above steps, the issue might be caused by:
- A loose display connection
- A failing LCD panel
- A faulty power management chip
At this point, your best option is to visit an Apple-authorized service center or a reputable repair shop for a full diagnostic.
