iPhone 4S Won’t Charge? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone 4S won’t charge at all or charges only sometimes, don’t panic just yet — you might not need a new battery or phone. From bad charging cables to dirt in the port, there are several things that can cause this issue — many of which you can troubleshoot at home.
Follow the steps below to figure out what’s stopping your iPhone 4S from charging and how to fix it.
1. Check Your Charger and Cable
The most common culprit is a damaged cable or adapter.
- Try using a different charging cable — especially if your current one is frayed or bent.
- Swap the power adapter as well.
- Make sure you’re using an Apple-certified charger or at least a high-quality third-party one.
Also, avoid charging from cheap extension cords. Plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet.
2. Try a Different Wall Outlet
Sometimes the problem isn’t the charger — it’s the power source.
- Plug your charger into a different wall outlet.
- Avoid surge protectors or power strips if you’re not sure they’re working properly.
3. Inspect and Clean the Charging Port
Dirt, lint, or moisture in the 30-pin charging port can prevent your iPhone from connecting properly.
- Use a clean, dry toothbrush or a can of compressed air to gently clean the port.
- Don’t poke inside with metal objects — you could damage the pins.
- If the port is wet, leave the phone in a cool, dry place for a few hours to allow it to air dry.
4. Try Charging From a Computer USB Port
If charging from the wall isn’t working:
- Plug your iPhone into a computer USB port using the charging cable.
- It will charge slower, but it may bypass issues with the adapter or power outlet.
If it works, your iPhone is likely fine — the issue is with the wall charger or power adapter.
5. Force Restart Your iPhone
Software glitches can freeze the system and stop it from recognizing the charger.
To force restart:
- Hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
- Keep holding both until you see the Apple logo.
Try charging again after the reboot.
6. Perform a Hard Reset with iTunes
If nothing else has worked, you can try restoring your iPhone to factory settings via iTunes.
⚠️ This will erase all data — back up first if possible.
Steps:
- Turn off your iPhone.
- Open iTunes on your computer.
- Plug in the USB cable, then hold the Home button while connecting your iPhone.
- iTunes will detect the iPhone in recovery mode — click OK.
- Select Restore iPhone > Restore and Update.
iTunes will wipe and reinstall iOS. Once finished, try charging the phone again.
Still Not Charging? It Could Be a Hardware Issue
If your iPhone 4S still refuses to charge after all these steps, you may have:
- A damaged charging port
- A bad battery
- A faulty charging IC (internal chip)
Your best bet at this point is to take your device to an Apple Store or authorized service center for diagnosis and repair.
