iPhone 4S Says “No Service”? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone 4S is suddenly showing a “No Service” error, you won’t be able to make calls, send texts, or connect to mobile data. This issue is common on older iPhones and can be caused by anything from a bad SIM card to a network settings glitch or even hardware failure.

Here’s a full step-by-step guide to help you fix the iPhone 4S “No Service” error and get your reception back.

1. Check for Software and Carrier Updates

First, make sure your iPhone is running the latest available iOS version and carrier settings.

  • Connect your iPhone 4S to a computer with iTunes installed.
  • Select your iPhone in iTunes and click Check for Update.
  • Install any available software and carrier updates.

Sometimes these updates contain bug fixes that resolve connectivity issues.

2. Confirm You’re in a Coverage Area

Before diving into fixes, check your surroundings:

  • Are other devices on the same network also showing “No Service”?
  • If yes, it might be a carrier outage — call your mobile provider.
  • If no, and only your iPhone is affected, keep troubleshooting below.

3. Force Restart Your iPhone 4S

This simple step refreshes the software and reconnects to the network.

To force restart:

  1. Hold the Home button and Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
  2. Continue holding until you see the Apple logo.
  3. Release both buttons and let the phone reboot.

4. Reseat or Replace the SIM Card

The SIM card could be loose, dirty, or damaged.

  1. Turn off your iPhone.
  2. Remove the SIM card.
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then reinsert it.
  4. Power your phone back on and check the signal.

Still no service?

  • Try using a different SIM card to test.
  • If a new SIM works, your old one is likely faulty and needs replacing.

5. Check Roaming Settings

If you’ve recently traveled internationally, you might still have data roaming turned on.

To check:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options
  2. Tap Data Roaming and turn it OFF

Roaming can cause reception issues in your home country if it stays active.

6. Toggle Airplane Mode On and Off

This quickly resets your phone’s cellular radios.

  1. Go to Settings > Airplane Mode
  2. Turn it ON, wait 10 seconds, then turn it OFF

Let your phone reconnect to the network and check for signal.

7. Reset Network Settings

This will clear out all saved network settings (including Wi-Fi and VPN), which may be interfering with your signal.

To reset:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Reset
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings
  3. Enter your passcode if asked and confirm

Your iPhone will reboot and load default network configurations.

8. Perform a Factory Reset (Last Resort)

⚠️ This erases all data. Back up your phone to iCloud or iTunes first.

To factory reset via iTunes:

  1. Turn off your iPhone.
  2. Connect it to your computer with iTunes running while holding the Home button.
  3. iTunes will detect the device in Recovery Mode.
  4. Click Restore iPhone > Restore and Update

iTunes will reinstall the software and reset your device.

Still Seeing “No Service”?

If the error persists even after a reset:

  • Your iPhone’s antenna or baseband chip may be damaged.
  • Take it to an Apple Store or authorized repair center for hardware diagnostics.
