How to Set Up and Activate Voicemail on iPhone
Can’t figure out how to set up voicemail on your iPhone? Whether you’re new to iOS or just never got around to it, setting up voicemail is quick and easy—and super useful for when you miss a call.
Here’s how to get voicemail up and running on your iPhone, plus what to do if it’s not working.
Open the Phone App
- Tap the Phone app on your iPhone’s Home screen.
- Tap the Voicemail tab at the bottom right corner.
Tap “Set Up Now”
- If this is your first time setting up voicemail, you’ll see a Set Up Now button—tap it.
- Create a voicemail password (usually 4 to 6 digits), then tap Done.
- Re-enter the password to confirm, then tap Done again.
Choose a Greeting
- You’ll be asked to choose between:
- Default: A generic greeting with your number.
- Custom: Record your own message.
- To record a custom greeting, tap Record, speak your message, then tap Stop.
- Tap Play to preview it, then Save when you’re happy.
Check Voicemail Is Working
- Call your own phone number from another device or ask a friend to call you.
- Let it go to voicemail and leave a test message.
- Go back to the Voicemail tab to make sure the message appears.
If You Don’t See the “Set Up Now” Option
This usually means voicemail is already set up or something’s not right on your carrier’s end.
Try these steps:
- Restart your iPhone.
- Make sure you’re connected to a cellular network.
- Call your carrier’s voicemail number (sometimes holding 1 works) and follow the prompts.
If you’re still stuck, call your carrier’s customer service to confirm that voicemail is included in your plan and is active on your line.
What You Can Do With Voicemail on iPhone
Once it’s set up, you can:
- Tap to play, pause, or delete messages.
- Use Visual Voicemail to read transcriptions (if supported by your carrier).
- Share voicemail messages via Messages, Mail, or AirDrop.
