Messenger is a go-to app for staying in touch, but when it starts crashing on your iPhone 7 Plus, it can get frustrating fast. Whether it crashes when opening, freezes randomly, or won’t load messages, here are all the steps you can take to fix it.
We’ll start with the simplest solutions first, then work our way up to more advanced fixes.
1. Restart Your iPhone
A simple restart clears out minor software bugs and can sometimes stop app crashes entirely.
- Press and hold the Power (Side) button.
- Slide to power off.
- Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
Still crashing? Try the next fix.
2. Force Close the Messenger App
If Messenger is glitching or frozen, force quitting it might help.
- Double-press the Home button to open the app switcher.
- Find the Messenger preview and swipe it up to close it.
- Reopen Messenger and check if it works normally.
3. Update Messenger from the App Store
Outdated versions of apps are prone to bugs.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon at the top right.
- Scroll to find Messenger and tap Update if available.
4. Check Your Internet Connection
Messenger needs a stable internet connection. Try this:
- Toggle Wi-Fi off and on.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa).
- Try loading Messenger on another network.
5. Offload Messenger to Clear Cached Data
Offloading the app removes temporary junk but keeps your app data safe.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find and tap Messenger.
- Tap Offload App.
- Tap Reinstall App once the option appears.
If this doesn’t help, try uninstalling the app completely.
6. Uninstall and Reinstall Messenger
This gives the app a clean slate — especially helpful if files got corrupted.
- Long-press the Messenger icon on the Home screen.
- Tap Remove App, then Delete App.
- Open the App Store, search for Messenger, and reinstall it.
7. Reset Network Settings
This resets all your internet settings — great if the issue is connectivity-related.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode to confirm.
Note: This will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords, VPN settings, and paired Bluetooth devices.
8. Still Not Working? Contact Facebook Support
If none of these fixes worked, the issue might be on Facebook’s end.
Visit the Facebook Help Center and report the issue with as much detail as possible.
