Getting iTunes Error 13014 when trying to sync music to your iPhone or iPad? This error usually appears as:
“The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (13014).”
It’s typically related to corrupted media files or conflicts with security software. Here’s how to fix it.
1. Update iTunes and Your iOS Device
Before anything else, make sure you’re running the latest version of:
- iTunes (macOS Mojave or earlier or on Windows)
- macOS or Windows OS
- Your iPhone or iPad (via Settings > General > Software Update)
Keeping everything updated helps eliminate compatibility issues that may trigger Error 13014.
2. Consolidate Your iTunes Library
If your media files are spread out across different folders, iTunes might fail to locate them.
Here’s how to consolidate them:
- Open iTunes.
- From the menu bar, go to File > Library > Organize Library.
- Check Consolidate files.
- Click OK.
This copies all media into one folder, which helps iTunes sync content more smoothly.
3. Temporarily Disable Security Software
Antivirus or firewall software can interfere with iTunes, especially during syncing.
- Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall.
- Then try syncing again.
- If the error is gone, add iTunes to the exceptions list of your security software.
Be sure to turn protection back on after testing.
4. Sync Music in Small Batches
A corrupted track can cause the entire sync to fail. Try syncing a few songs at a time:
- Start with a small playlist or a few songs.
- Gradually increase the number of files.
- If you encounter the error again, narrow it down to the specific track causing the problem.
Delete that track from your library, then redownload or re-import it.
5. Additional Tips
- Restart both your computer and iPhone before trying again.
- Make sure iCloud Music Library or Apple Music Sync isn’t conflicting with manual sync.
- Use another USB cable or USB port if possible.
If none of these steps work, consider reinstalling iTunes or using Finder (on macOS Catalina and later) to sync your music manually.
