iPhone XS Keeps Disconnecting from Wi-Fi After iOS 12.1.4 Update? Here’s How to Fix It

After updating to iOS 12.1.4, many iPhone XS users have reported an annoying issue: random Wi-Fi disconnections. If your iPhone keeps dropping its Wi-Fi signal and you’re stuck switching between cellular and wireless, this guide will walk you through the fixes.

1. Restart Your Router and Your iPhone

Before tweaking settings, make sure your Wi-Fi signal source is stable.

To reboot your router:

  • Unplug the router/modem from power.
  • Wait 30–60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and wait until all lights are back on.

Then reboot your iPhone XS:

  • Hold Side + Volume Up or Down, slide to power off.
  • Wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.

2. Toggle Wi-Fi or Use Airplane Mode Trick

This quick refresh helps re-establish a better connection.

  • Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Turn it OFF, then turn it ON after 10 seconds.

Or try the Airplane Mode trick:

  1. Turn Airplane Mode ON from Settings.
  2. Restart your iPhone while it’s still on.
  3. After reboot, go back and turn Airplane Mode OFF.
  4. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and test stability.

3. Forget and Reconnect to Your Wi-Fi Network

If your Wi-Fi network is corrupted, resetting it may fix the dropouts.

  • Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  • Tap the “i” next to your network > Tap Forget This Network.
  • Reconnect by selecting the network again and entering your password.

4. Reset Network Settings

This will clear out saved networks, VPNs, and misconfigurations.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  • Tap Reset Network Settings.
  • Reconnect to your Wi-Fi and test again.

Note: This won’t delete your data, but it will wipe saved Wi-Fi passwords.

5. Restore Your iPhone via iTunes (If All Else Fails)

If none of the above works, a deeper system reset may be required.

To restore using iTunes:

  1. Connect your iPhone XS to your computer.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Enter Recovery Mode:
    • Quickly press and release Volume Up.
    • Quickly press and release Volume Down.
    • Hold the Side button until you see the Connect to iTunes logo.
  4. In iTunes, choose Restore when prompted.

Bonus Fix: Use DFU Mode (Last Resort)

If the restore didn’t help, you can try a DFU (Device Firmware Update) restore for a clean install.

Still Not Working? Contact Your ISP or Apple Support

  • Check with your Internet Service Provider for outages or request a remote router reset.
  • If Wi-Fi issues only affect the iPhone, contact Apple Support to report a potential firmware bug.
